What do you use pregnancy as an excuse to get out of?

Ok... so at my gym, they really hastel you to get personal training.. I have loved being PG cause I just say "cant Im Pregnant"- they cant object! I have probably used it like 5 times now... and I dont have to feel guilty

I was at a wedding and this gross old man kept asking me to dance.. and I said "Cant, Im pregnant!" totally worked.. he left me alone

Its also a good excuse for DH to do things for me- like get me a glass of water, bring me the remote, cook me dinner.... whatever I dont feel like exerting effort to do... its kinda nice to have this little excuse in my back pocket.

pregnancy is a good excuse for some things sometime! have you guys used it for anything good?

  • I haven't used my pregnancy as an excuse to get out if anything. But then again, I'm pretty adept at saying no to salespeople and sketchy old men.

  • Tonight it will be rubbing lotion on my feet. They've gotten really dry, but reaching them is getting difficult. I asked DH last night if he would rub my feet with lotion tonight and he just smiled and laughed because he knew why I was asking. I'm really independant so saying I can't is hard. While he's likely not thrilled about the task itself, I think he secretly likes that I need his help more and more lately.

As far as getting me out of things, I use it to avoid house guests I'm not in the mood for. When we moved (during the first trimester) people wanted to stop by that I just wasn't in the mood to see while we were still unpacking and getting settled. Admittedly I was exhausted, but I probably used it more frequently than I needed to.

  • I ask DH to do things for me all the time, just little things like get me a glass of water or whatever.

At work especially, I ask people to carry/lift heavy things.  No one minds that though, and some people yell at me for carrying the things that I still do.  But I think of all the ladies that have toddlers and how there's no way you're going to be able to getting out of carrying them, so I see it as getting out of something :)

  • I was in a store and closing time was minutes away.  I really had to go to the bathroom and normally, I wouldn't have gone since they were almost closing, but I went anyway.  My friend was really happy to be with me!!!  I felt bad, but we were really quick!

I was about to grab a bag of cat food at costco the other day and it was my husband who was like "NOOOO, you're pregnant don't try to lift that" :P

If I don't clean the toilet and tub though, it won't get done :S

On the other hand: Once in a while I'll have some friendly gentlemen offer me a ride while walking home.. never taken anyone up on that offer though.. haha

Last week my mom took me on a doctor approved shopping trip to babies r us (had to ride in a wheel chair). But on the way home we stopped really quick to pick up something to eat. She just parked on the street at a meter and ran in. I stayed in the car. sure enough a meter maid showed up and started yelling at me for not feeding the meter. I told him I had some quarters, but asked him if he could feed the meter for me. He tells me no, he can't take any money. So I open the door and prepare to hoist myself out of the car. He took one look at my giant belly and said "no, no, no, just give me the money I'll do it." HA!

Yup. If anything, I find that I have to keep reminding people that I can still do [insert activity here]. Yes, I'm pregnant, but I'm not dying.

Exactly. I spend the majority of the time trying to remind people that I can still fully function and do pretty much everything I did before pregnancy. I haven't ever used pregnancy as an excuse to get out of something I didn't want to do.

  • I havent needed to use it as an excuse, most people around me bend over backwards stopping me from doing stuff.

Example - carrying heavy boxes, and with my ILs - carrying light boxes.  They are paranoid.

Sometimes it gets annoying.  We have a 2 step - step ladder at work.  My staff freak if they see me walking up it.  It is as sturdy as the stairs.  And it is just 2 steps up.  so now, I also dont do any high filing.

  • I took your question not to mean, what are you not doing now that you did before pregnancy (some of which is probably prudent to avoid while pregnant) but rather what do you know you COULD do but don't because you're using your pregnancy as an excuse to get out of stuff.

I don't think I'm using my pregnancy to get out of stuff.  But I also think my attitude about this shifted when I was told by my doctors not to do certain things.

On behalf of MrsLoos and the other women who are on some form of bed rest, I will say that if you have the ability and your doctor's permission to proceed as normal, then you should do so and consider yourself lucky.  The things I've been told to avoid since my fluid issues (exercise, running errands, grocery shopping, basically anything that requires me to be outside and/or exerting myself) are things that I genuinely miss doing.  I can't imagine how much harder it is for women on bed rest.

For those of you who have it, enjoy your freedom.

Agreed. Obviously, if you have had any complications and the dr/midwife is putting restrictions on your activities then by all means, fully comply with those. Otherwise, there is nothing that bugs me more than a pregnancy martyr.

Same here. If anything, it's other people trying to tell me that I can't do something. Sometimes it's something stupid and I ignore them and sometimes it's something that I guess I can let someone else do (like lift something heavy). But, I've never been the one to ask someone to do it.

  • Yes, DH does a few things because I cannot do them anymore....like lifting heavy stuff and taking care of the cat litter. Other than that, I honestly try not to use the pregnancy card.

I guess I am too much for myself sometimes. In fact, I think I am an idiot for not playing the pregnancy card.

  • Nothing, but the hubs is using it as an excuse to get out of all social obligations for like, the whole month of October. As in "sorry, we can't attend your charity event, she may go into labor." I find it funny that he's the one milking my "delicate condition."  My FIL is also excited that we get to use the baby to get out of going to MIL's family Thanksgiving (it's not even that long of a drive, but the baby might only be two weeks old).

This made me chuckle.  MH is doing this too.

In fact, he's been talking since I got KU about me trying to get a handicapped placard so that HE doesn't have that far to walk when he runs errands.  I would never seek out a handicapped placard just b/c I'm pregnant, so he hasn't gotten his way, but yeah.  He's way more ready to play the pregnancy card than I am.

  • i have never used it as an excuse except for when the inlaws wanted us to drive to their house for a BBQ and they don't have ac--DH told them no way was i going with the crazy heat.

DH cleans the litter box and scrubs the shower for me--but he offered, and i am no fool.  Stick out tongue

also DH has taken over giving DD her baths because it is harder for me to bend over the tub now--i still assist and then do her lotion, pjs etc....but he is a big help.

  • Pretty much everything, but not by choice.  I have been instructed by my MFM:  no stairs.  no long walks (park as close to building as possible).  No bending/stooping/squatting/lifting (specifically, I can't pick up my son unless absolutely necessary, am not suppose to move clothes from wasther to dryer, or bend to get them out of the dryer, no bending to open bottom file cabinet at work, no picking up toys off the floor, etc.)  If I stand too long I get dizzy and out of breath, so cooking anything other than something to toss in the microwave is out.

Basically I feel like a total, worthless sloth.  But it has to be this way, and limiting my activity IS WORKING!  As of today my babies weigh a combined total of basically 7lbs and look absolutely perfect.  Doc told me that me just sitting in a chair is the equivalent of a normal person running up a big flight of stairs - that's how hard my heart has to work to support these 3 lives right now (mine and the twins).

I never thought I'd look forward to the day that I can do laundry and dishes again LOL

I'm not on bed rest but pretty darn close with all of the restrictions the MFM has given me.  Just wanted to say...ITA with you here, particularly the bolded parts.  Never until now have I fully understood how much we take our health and ability for granted.  I am a pretty independent gal and can NOT wait until I can take care of myself, house and children again (DH is ready too haha)!

  • Anything I don't wanna do which lately is a lot.  Though I can't stand when people act like me being pregnant means I can't do anything at all.  Like my mom lifted a case of pop into my cart.  But I lift my 2 year old all day.  I think I can handle the small stuff.  But I do get DH to make dinner, give DD a bath, get me a glass of water or before GD a bowl of icecream.  Stuff like that.

  • I just had the best reason.  I came home from work and checked the mail.  I found a summons for Jury Duty starting 9/19.  I'm going to be 8.5 months at that point. After I pouted for a couple of minutes about what a pain that would be, I found the exemption for Expectant Mothers.  So excited about that!  I feel like a lawyer would question me and I would have to get up and pee every 15 minutes.  No thanks!

As far as around the house stuff, I like not having to clean the cat litter. I try to make DH take the trash to the curb, but that's about it.   I still do almost everything else.

  • Anything that has weird/strong smells. Chemicals, dirty dishes, litter box. Obviously doing the dishes isn't unsafe for pregnancy, but it usually gags me to the point of throwing up, so I try to avoid it at all cost. I have noticed though when friends invite me somewhere, I always tell them "if I feel like it" and if I am honestly not feeling well and don't go, they don't get mad. :) Pre-pregnancy, nothing short of a broken bone would have gotten me out of a girls night. Haha.
  • I used it to not have to move my office when I switched jobs this week. My other office would be in another building 1/2 mile away, but I would spend a lot of time in my current building. My employees are split between the two buildings. My boss just told me to pack up my boxes so the movers can move them when I am on maternity leave.

I wouldn't have cared if it wasn't so darn hot (42 days of 100+ temps) and the parking wasn't so bad.

Oh and I just wanted to clarify that I meant I haven't used it to get out of things I am capable of doing. And if I don't want to go somewhere or do something I give the same reasoning I would pregnant or not.
