2nd Trimester

choroid plexus cysts and echogenic bowel

Has anyone else had these come up on their ultrasound?

I had a level II u/s yesterday after the quad screen came back abnormal (1 in 221) and it showed bilateral choroid plexus cysts and an echogenic bowel.  After the u/s results the genetic counselor moved that risk up to 1 in 80.  The doctor said it could be absolutely nothing and that the baby is fine OR it could mean trisomy 18, Down syndrome, that the baby ingested blood or that I have an infection.

My husband and I are terrified.  We did the amnio, which was the most horrible experience ever, and will get FISH rapid results tomorrow.  I am just wondering if anyone else can tell me about their experiences.

Re: choroid plexus cysts and echogenic bowel

  • My second tri screening showed both an echogenic heart focus and an echogenic bowel and they offered me amnio but I declined. When I went back to see my OB she says a lot of times these things show up and then disappear later on and end up being nothing at all... I've heard of a lot of ladies having these downs markers and having a perfectly normal baby. Did you do the first tri u/s tests?

No.  I was never even offered the NT scan or the blood work that goes with it.  I guess my OB never brought it up since I have no family history of birth defects/chromosomal abnormalities and I am 29, not over 35.  Now I think I should have asked her to do those screenings.

  • i had the choroid plexus cysts & just did the amnio b/c eventhough i'm sure everything will come back fine, i would worry myself sick until the baby was born.
  • Don't stress yourself over it, those things are found on completely normal babies too, sometimes just little kinks and bugs in developing that disappear later in the pregnancy. Sometimes it's even just over-sensitive or poor U/S equipment or a poor U/S tech. Instead of doing the amnio I opted for another ultrasound and since the midwife I was with is nice she wrote it off in a way that my insurance would cover it. Just going to see if maybe it clears up on its own and hope for the best. Also yes if you would have done the NT scan sometimes it makes your odds better (or worse obviously depending on the findings). Since I had done the NT scan and had a good score on that, the combined score with my Second tri screening was better than it would have been without the NT information. I had 1/6000 for the NT and with the 2 markers for downs in the second tri it went down to 1/1000. She said it was at about 1/1000 only because of the results from my first tests.

  • I know how you feel - hugs!  Seriously - it can all be fine.  We had the choroid cysts with my DS.  Scared the S*@*@* out of me.  The worst thing I did was google and try and read up on them.  Seriously - try and take it easy, don't worry.  I had to go back for another ultrasound (4 weeks later) and everything was fine.  I have a very healthy 2 year old!  Good luck!

  • Helllo!

I posted today about an echogenic finding from my anatomy scan on Friday and same as you, of course freaking out.   We were pretty much told the same thing about  what it could mean or may not mean.  My doctors don't seem overly concerned b/c of my negative/low risk sequential screen and I'm negative for CF, but I'm still completely freaking out.  All the googling I've done since Friday certainly doesn't help..  My doctor didn't recommend an amino based on my first trimester screening and I wouldnt' be interested based on the risks for loss anyway, but I feel like all I'm going to do is worry for the next 19 weeks.
