If you're new, let us know the basics - when did you start TTC, what is your diagnosis/suspicion, where are you at in the process/next steps? Please let us know if you have upcoming treatments, so we can check in with you on a more regular basis during that time. Also read this check-in often the first week it is posted so we can answer everyone's questions. (It seems prolonged to have someone ask a question in this post and not have it answered until next month's check-in!) Finally, if you have suggestions about what else should be included in the check-in or changes, throw them out there!

Questions (there were three questions last month that were not answered, it would be great if people could answer them this month):
1) Where are you at in the process/what is your next step?
2) What are you doing fun this month that is non-IF related?
3) Any vents/confessions?
4) tst1998: Any one who has done IVF, how did you decide whether or not to do ICSI? We have unexplained IF, so good response to injectables with IUI, good sperm count. Technically we don't *need* ICSI, but I'm wondering if a $3000 is worth it to guarantee something fertilizes, or if I'm just being overly-anxious.
5) Kglan: How do I make it through another IVF cycle, this time with a very active toddler?
6) Purvalicious: Do you resist fertility treatments even when it seems like the logical next step? I know I do, even though logically I know that we're going to have to get there eventually.
7) Any questions you'd like to ask the other ladies?
Re: August Infertility Check-In (SAIFW)
1) Where are you at in the process/what is your next step? Big news, we have decided we can afford to take the next steps in 2012! I am switching insurances in January and then we hope to do IVF in the spring or summer. I've got lots of research to do until then, but it feels so nice to say 2012 we will definitely be doing something to grow our family!
2) What are you doing fun this month that is non-IF related? We are going to Glacier National Park in Montana at the end of this month for a camping trip. We are super-excited.
3) Any vents/confessions? I'm sad this board has gotten so slow with the Facebook exodus. I liked reading/learning about baby stuff on this board, and I can't keep up with the Facebook stuff.
I feel like with unexplained IF, every little bit that helps ensure the pregnancy (even if sperm counts are good) would be the way to go. It seems like ICIS is worth the peace of mind knowing that you did everything you could.
5) Kglan: How do I make it through another IVF cycle, this time with a very active toddler? Sorry, don't know the answer to this one!
6) Purvalicious: Do you resist fertility treatments even when it seems like the logical next step? I know I do, even though logically I know that we're going to have to get there eventually. I don't resist (just can't afford.) But I think if I were unexplained, I would resist more because I would just keep thinking to myself, just one more time will do the trick. So I can see why you might resist.
7) Any questions you'd like to ask the other ladies?
1) Where are you at in the process/what is your next step? Pregnant, and waiting for the worry to stop
2) What are you doing fun this month that is non-IF related?N/A
3) Any vents/confessions? This is going to sound horrible and please don't hate me/ judge me. Even though I'm pregnant, I know AT LEAST 4 IRL friends that are due with in weeks of me and it makes me extremely jealous. I think it's becuase 1- it was so easy for them (3 I know for a fact it was the first month trying) and 2- we were really excited to announce and have everyone be so thrilled but they were like, oh wow, we are pregnant too. It sounds horrible but it kinda felt like it wasn't a big deal anymore since everyone else is pregnant, too. OK pitty party over.
4) tst1998: Any one who has done IVF, how did you decide whether or not to do ICSI? We have unexplained IF, so good response to injectables with IUI, good sperm count. Technically we don't *need* ICSI, but I'm wondering if a $3000 is worth it to guarantee something fertilizes, or if I'm just being overly-anxious. ours wasn't $3,000, closer to $1,800 but for us we knew we were already spending a lot (money energy emotions) and wanted to do what ever we could to increase our chances. The odds weren't that much lower with out but we made the decision to go that way.
5) Kglan: How do I make it through another IVF cycle, this time with a very active toddler? Supportive husband and lots and lots of ice cream! I was really worried about it with a pre schooler but he didn't notice and i think i over stressed about it. Lots of movies, new color books and low key activities.
6) Purvalicious: Do you resist fertility treatments even when it seems like the logical next step? I know I do, even though logically I know that we're going to have to get there eventually, yes becaue you think "maybe it will happen, there is no reason it's not". It's hard to get your mind to that spot that you accept the next steps. Let's GTG soon, I've been thinking about you!
7) Any questions you'd like to ask the other ladies?
Questions (there were three questions last month that were not answered, it would be great if people could answer them this month):
1) Where are you at in the process/what is your next step? Still in the not preventing (since the birth of DS March 2010..); I'm also seeing a naturopath and I'm on natural homrone replacements (my progesterone and estrogen were both still low when I had followup b/w a few weeks ago - so they upped my doses.. and now I'm having cramping and some light bleeding!! Which to many would be negative but after not having a period since 10/2007 I'm so excited to *hopefully* be making some progress and maybe actually get to TTC before having to use IF methods.
2) What are you doing fun this month that is non-IF related? My BFF is getting married Saturday and I'm the matron of honor
3) Any vents/confessions? I also miss the board and regular posters/posts over here - FB is ok, but definitely not the same
4) tst1998: Any one who has done IVF, how did you decide whether or not to do ICSI? We have unexplained IF, so good response to injectables with IUI, good sperm count. Technically we don't *need* ICSI, but I'm wondering if a $3000 is worth it to guarantee something fertilizes, or if I'm just being overly-anxious.
We didn't do ICSI - we were basically unexplained as well (I have amennorhea - but unknown cause of it). DH had very high sperm counts and we had no known issues so this didn't even come up for us. We were extremely lucky also that our first IVF was mostly covered by DH's insurance so the cost wasn't a big factor.
5) Kglan: How do I make it through another IVF cycle, this time with a very active toddler?
I think watchpot had some good ideas - this is another fear I have for TTC #2 .. I remember how drained and stressed I was going through IVF #1 that I don't know how I'm going to get through it with a toddler..
6) Purvalicious: Do you resist fertility treatments even when it seems like the logical next step? I know I do, even though logically I know that we're going to have to get there eventually.
Yes ... we have never technically gotten to TTC on our own since I have never had cycles. I always hope that we can try or that things will change and we won't have to use fertility treatments. I'm in the same boat this time - although I would like my kids to be 2 years apart - I'm not ready for more fertility treatments so we're putting it off until DS is 2 at least ..
7) Any questions you'd like to ask the other ladies?
YEAH!!! I'm so happy you are finally able to move forward. It must be a relief to have something to work towards.
1) Where are you at in the process/what is your next step?
IVF#1 is underway! I start Lupron tomorrow, stims start 8/15. Tentative ER is 8/27 with (hopefully!) a 5d transfer on 8/31. It still doesn't feel real, but I'm just taking it one day at a time.
2) What are you doing fun this month that is non-IF related?
Montana tomorrow! We rented a cabin with my sister, her boyfriend, my brother and SIL and their two kids (3 y and 6 m). It's just for the weekend, but I'm so excited to get out of here for a few days.
3) Any vents/confessions?
Completely not IF related, but I'm kind of dreading my BIL's wedding next month. They are doing a lot of DIY stuff, including going to the LA Flower Market the day before their wedding to get all the flowers and make the centerpieces and bouquets themselves, driving all the alcohol to the venue, etc. I fear this will turn into everyone else saving their asses when they realize it is going to take 3 trips to get all the alcohol from Orange County to Malibu in their tiny impractical cars, that they have no way to transport all the flowers to the venue and that floral arrangement and bouquet making actually requires some skill and knowledge. Thus I am not going to be able to go visit my friends and their new baby while we are down there, because I'll be stuck helping out.
4) tst1998: Any one who has done IVF, how did you decide whether or not to do ICSI?
To answer my own question, we aren't doing it. I asked my RE about it (she's back from maternity leave! Yay!) and she says they have done studies looking at ICSI for unexplained infertility, and while the fertilization rates are higher, the implantation rates and live birth rates are the same whether you do ICSI or not. She didn't recommend it, so we aren't doing it.
5) Purvalicious: Do you resist fertility treatments even when it seems like the logical next step? I know I do, even though logically I know that we're going to have to get there eventually.
I did for the longest time. As often as this last break cycle I still believed we would get pregnant and not need IVF. It's really hard with unexplained IF, because I feel if we just kept at it long enough, it would happen on it's own. I was afraid if I waited too long though, we would only have time to have one child, and I always imagined having two. You give up a lot with fertility treatments, so it's a hard step to take. You just make the move when you are ready.

April IVF Spring Chicks
Hi KRose. I suppose you can add me to your list. I don't post over here really, but I occasionally lurk & noticed this thread today. I wouldn't mind connecting with some local ladies having trouble TTC.
My little intro: I'm Jenny. I'm 29, DH is 35. We're about to finish up cycle 13 with no success. I have a blocked tube (probably due to my appendix rupturing in college), an endometrial polyp, and a gigantic cyst. DH has 0% morph, and low everything else. We both have hypothyroidism. DH also has a disease that gives him chronic vertigo, which can sometimes get in the way of good timing (which doesn't really matter now, given our diagnoses). We have an appointment with a urologist on the 30th to see if we can improve DH's numbers, or if we have to move straight to IVF.
1) Where are you at in the process/what is your next step?See above. If DH's numbers can be improved, I'll have a hysteroscopy to remove the polyp AND a lap to try to unblock my tube. Then we could try IUI. Otherwise it's straight to IVF (when we can afford it), and I only need the polypectomy.
2) What are you doing fun this month that is non-IF related? Right now I'm enjoying my last few weeks of freedom before the school year starts (I'm a teacher)!3) Any vents/confessions? I struggle a lot to keep up hope. Being in infertility limbo right now is driving me insane. I actually WISH I had an upcoming RE appointment to look forward to!4) tst1998: Any one who has done IVF, how did you decide whether or not to do ICSI? We have unexplained IF, so good response to injectables with IUI, good sperm count. Technically we don't *need* ICSI, but I'm wondering if a $3000 is worth it to guarantee something fertilizes, or if I'm just being overly-anxious. If we do IVF, I'm under the assumption that we'll NEED ICSI because of DH's MFI. If we were unexplained, I'd ask about emergency ICSI. That way, we'd only do it if it was absolutely needed. 5) Kglan: How do I make it through another IVF cycle, this time with a very active toddler? Can't help you here!6) Purvalicious: Do you resist fertility treatments even when it seems like the logical next step? I know I do, even though logically I know that we're going to have to get there eventually. Not at all. I want to treat as aggressively as possible. Maybe I'm just impatient, but there's times that I feel I can't wait even another minute to be a mother, and I will do anything I have to do to get there. If we could afford it, we'd do IVF immediately.7) Any questions you'd like to ask the other ladies? Do you have Aetna or Regence as your insurance, and does your plan cover any IF treatment? I know individual plans vary, but I've heard that Aetna (DH's insurance) has an IF program you can enroll in. I'm curious if I need to be more aggressive about seeing if there's an IF rider we can add.Sorry I didn't get to this last month and I saw that you answered already. For anyone else in this situation, have your DH do the AR test (Acrosomal Reaction). These results will tell you for certain if you need ICSI. It's not about counts or mobility in IVF, since the embryologist puts a set number of sperm right in with each egg, The question is can the sperm fertilize, so they test that. This is what our RE had us do. It cost $700, which seems like a lot, but they run a lot of tests. It's a more complex SA, with a fertilization test. We had good results, so we skipped ICSI (which would have been $1800).

I'll be curious to see how this goes! Unless we have a miracle happen on our own for #2, I'll be in this position, too. GL!!

Hi Jenny. I'll add you to the list for next month! I usually post once a month, the first week of the month. (I try to do it on the 1st, but usually only get to it on the 2nd or 3rd.) Unfortunately, I don't have any answers about your insurance question. We're glad you've joined us! And feel free to ask IF questions on this board anytime - no need to wait for this check-in!
Lexi - We're still looking into adoption as an option. Although after visiting a couple of different agencies, I feel like we're leaning towards IVF right now.So I say we'll do IVF in 2012, but if for some reason after more research or the right opportunity we decide to do adoption - that's certainly a possiblity instead.
