ADHD follow up for those interested

I'm starting meds tomorrow - my doctor and I talked about my issues/symptoms and she thinks it's definitely something to pursue. I got my prescription filled (Vyvance) and we're going to see how it goes.

I'll let y'all know if it helps or makes a difference.

Also, I see a therapist already, so I will be discussing this with her and probably addressing it there too and not just meds.

Good luck! I've never heard of Vyvance. Any reason she chose that over another medication?

She said she likes it better b/c the crash is less noticeable/bad. Also it is not easily abused. It doesn't have a generic yet, but I guess (and I could explain this wrong so feel free to correct me if anyone knows) with adderall, you can snort it or inject it or something and it will get to you faster and make you high, like speed, but with vyvance even if you do those things it will still be an extended release situation (I think).

She had a few other reasons why she liked it better and I really didn't care so much. I was only going to ask for something else if it was expensive since it doesn't have a generic. My copay for it was $7.50 so I don't think I'll complain.

I had a physical scheduled with my PCP, and they have you fill out a form before you go back with your concerns. So I listed it there along with a mole and allergy issues [I've had hives on and off for a month and we thought we had figured out the cause but they came back]. The nurse then asked for more detail on each thing, and I told her that I'd read an article about ADHD symptoms that sounded like my issues even though I'd taken anti-depressants that sort of helped after having Scarlett and that I then took a quiz that said I had ADHD and to see my doctor. They actually had me take a similar quiz and then I talked to my PCP about it and what I marked on the quiz. My issues are pretty textbook, so trying meds seemed like the best course of action.

I will probably cover it in my therapy sessions since my therapist does specialize in some ADHD issues, along w/ a few other things.

I'm interested in hearing how you like the Vyvanse. I'm on Adderall and it feels like I am riding an ocean wave sometimes - when it hits, I feel it in a major way, and then when it quits, I can tell as well. I'm thinking of asking for V next month for more consistency. (I think Adderall XR can't be abused either - just the instant release like I am on but wow - I accidentally took 15mg twice one day instead of 15 and 5, and felt like I was sooooo tweaked out. I can't imagine pursuing that feeling on purpose.)

you are probably right, Jenni, about the XR. I think the concern with it was the crash being so obvious. I'll let you know what I think about the Vyvanse. It could be pricey, I guess, but my copay was only $15 and then there is a 1/2 off copay deal from the manufacturer so I got it for $7.50.

I know a few of my brother's friends used to try and steal people's adderall. It was in college though, so I am not sure if it was for staying up and studying or what...

I will definitely check it out - my doctor and I were discussing this b/c of how I wasn't diagnosed as a child despite some fairly obvious symptoms since I wasn't a troublemaker in class. I was very withdrawn and quiet, whereas my brothers were the opposite and were diagnosed.

Jealous that vyvanase is only $7.50! My copay on that one is hella expensive, so I just take the generic of adderall ir.

This is me exactly. My brother was diagnosed as a child because he was the wild, crazy, definition of ADHD, where I was the chill spacey kid that got good enough grades but always got the "you have so much potential!' line. My mom was just diagnosed in the last few years too.

I had the same situation as a kid. After talking to my mom, I would bet she would also be considered ADD.

Good for you!

I'm glad your doctor listened to you and is helping you. We have pretty similar sypmtoms, so I can't wait to hear how it affects you. I keep wanting to call my doctor, but we're unsure if we'll TTC #3 or not, so I am dragging my feet for now until we decide.

Oh thanks for posting about your experience w/ Vyvanse! I mostly know people on Adderall, so I didn't know much about it. But I trust my doctor and since it wasn't cost prohibitive it made sense to go with her rec.

Yodajo - my meds do say to talk to your doctor if you are TTC or are pregnant. We are going back and forth on #3 but if we do have #3 it will be close to 2-3 years down the road so it's worth it to look into something now. Of course, Scarlett is a bit younger than your boys!

It makes a HUGE difference. The first week I started meds for ADHD (a year ago) I felt like I was in a fog. But after that it was amazing. I take Vyvanse as well - I had to try 3 different meds and adjust my dose before I found the magic one for me. But I hated Adderall.
