Anyone been to Moody Gardens?

We're taking a mini-vacation to Houston/Galveston next weekend and wanted to go to Moody Gardens while we're there. I think H would enjoy the aquarium and rainforest, but I'm not sure if the beach/waterpark would be too much for her. I haven't been to MG in years, so I can't remember. Are we better off spending one day there and then trying to go to an actual beach in Galveston?

Also, does anyone have any experience with the MG hotel? Are the rooms nice?

We went last year and LOVED it. DS was 18 months and DD was about to turn 3 years old. The MG hotel was perfect, I would totally recommend staying there. Kids eat free, which was nice. The splashpad was closed to us because they had a special event (it was during the week) but it looked perfect for DS. The beach was great, but the kids would have had much more freedom at the splash park, which includes their private beach.

We will absolutely stay at the hotel if we go back. I'm a huge fan of hotels that cater to families and it was just so convenient to be right on the grounds for naptime, etc.  We also spent a good amount of time on the playscape.

  • We went last year and the kids loved it.  We got a deal on the tickets - I don't remember where, maybe our credit card points? - so we did everything they offered.  Layna was about 20 months and Jakob was 8.  The aquarium and rainforest were my favorites.  Jakob loved the 3D movies but Layna wouldn't sit through them, DH and I took turns taking her out in the hall.  We all loved the paddlewheel boat once we found seats in the shade.  I wasn't very impressed with the waterpark...I thought the pool was dirty and Layna isn't a fan of splashpads.  We had a better time at the beach.  But I might be in the minority with that, I have friends who went and loved the waterpark.

We also ate at the restaurant there and it was pretty good.

We didn't see the hotel, we stayed in a hotel about 20 minutes inland.  It was a little cheaper and we got a suite with the kitchenette.  We brought food and ate in the room a lot.  We didn't mind the short drive to the island.  We'd go to the beach in the morning, go back to the hotel for lunch.  Shower and head back to Moody Gardens in the afternoon.  The kids would fall asleep in the car and we'd sit in the parking lot for another 30 minutes or so.

We had a two day pass, I liked being able to spread it out and not try to do everything in one day.
