What's the best pacifier for newborns?

    I think the best answer is "every baby is different." 

    For my DD, we weren't given a paci at the hospital, and we hadn't bought any.  People had given us a few random ones.  We finally bought her Soothies around 2 weeks, and she loved them.  

    I was one of those people that said "I'll never use a pacifier" and yet here I am, still giving it at bedtime/naptime.  But I have the most amazing sleeper, so I'll take it.  One day we'll get rid of it.

    Every baby is different.  Some won't take certain ones and others won't take a paci at all.  The Soothie pacifier worked well for us.  To answer the choking hazard thing, it specifically says on the instructions to take the pacifier away once your baby is able to fit the whole thing in his or her mouth.  That's something that people should have been checking.

    I think every baby is different.  We received a NUK at the hospital, and she thought it was ok but it didn't really soothe her.  Ultimately, she loved the Soothie.

    Totally depends on the baby.  I sure wouldn't spend a lot of money buying any one particular brand.  My babies never took paci's early on- even though we tried every one under the sun.  But at 6 mos, DD started taking an Avent one for naps/bedtime.  She also likes the Soothie on her wubbanub.  DS was even stranger and didn't take one until he was 1!  He liked the Avents too.  My lesson learned from him was that paci's are for bedtime only.  I think the paci contributed to his speech delay so we won't be making that mistake with DD.

    We tried Tommee Tippee pacis, but LO#1 couldn't keep them in his mouth. Then we tried MAMs and they worked great! But then again, like bottles, your LO will have to try them out and find out which is the fave.

    We bought Avent pacis.  The hospital gave us a Soothie.  At first she didn't seem to have a preference.  She could switch back and forth between the two, but now she prefers the Soothies.

    Which ever one the baby takes! lol DS refused avent soothie the one the hospital gave me. He only would take the avent contemporary freeflow pacifiers. That was after I bought about 3 other ones.

    We used Soothies for DD.  The hospital gave her a Soothie, and while I would have asked them not to give her a paci at all if I'd known about it ahead of time, they always worked really well for her and didn't interfere with BFing.

    Ditto others - the best paci for your newborn is the one your newborn likes!'

    We tried Soothies, Gumdrop, Nuk and Avent and she didn't like any of them - couldn't keep them in her mouth. We finally found MAM and it was love at first suck.

    MAM was given to us in the hospital and remains his number 1 favorite.  He also likes Avent but it has a little handle on in it that he kept using to pull out of his mouth which was very annoying. MAM would stay in longer, so it was our top choice.

    Agreed. If you plan on breastfeeding I'd resist the pacifier for as long as possible- we waited 4 weeks. While people debate back and forth on nipple confusion, I doubt there's much debate that a newborn's constant sucking will help your milk supply.

    When we intro'd one we used an Avent. We have tried a nuk now (10 weeks) and he doesn't like it as much.

    soothies/gumdrops were so big and heavy on the outside of the mouth part that she couldnt keep them in.

    DS tried Soothies, Tommee Tippee and Nuk.  The Nuks are the only ones he likes.

    I loathe Soothie.  I think they are too big and ugly for a small baby's face.  

    We used one from birth to about 4 months I stopped giving them. Avent and Tommee Tippee were his favorites.  We will be bringing those to the hospital for DD to try/use first.
