Crying in the car

Ok so the CIO post a few down made me think of this. If you are driving somewhere and LO is crying what do you do? I was driving home yesterday from my parents house and ran across this situation. She eventually stopped but I felt terrible. It isn't realistic to pull over every time she spits out the paci though. I don't let her just cry at home but I don't really see many options for the car.

  • I haven't dealt with this yet but I would drive for a minute or two to see if LO will stop crying on his own. If not, I would pull over somewhere safe to see why he is crying. Since your baby eventually stopped, I'm sure she was fine.

  • if someone is with me i wil sit in the back with my LO and he seems to be fine that way but if we are alone he will scare until we get to where ever it is we are going in the beginning i tried to pull over but that just doesn't work and i felt so bad but he has gotten alot better and won't even cry if someone is in the back seat with him. it was really hard to even leave the house for a while but when i went back to work i had no choice and his grandmother is his sitter and she is only like 2 minutes up the road and i think that's how he started getting used to it
  • This happened to me a week ago.  We were 15 mins from home and DS started to cry.  I tried to put his paci back in at a stoplight but he was too upset so he spit it out.  Since we were so close to home I let him cry, and after 10 mins he stopped and fell asleep.  Its very trying on your nerves but its not always realistic to stop every time they cry.  I'm pretty sure 10 or 15 mins of crying is okay.

  • When DD cries in the car it's because her paci fell out & she wants it back.  Sometimes me talking to her calms her but other times she will cry until we get to where we're going or I stop & give it back to her.  But I don't pull over usually since she's bound to lose it again anyway.

I just hope that she gets better with it the more we are in the car, but there isn't much you can do when you are by yourself!

  • It depends on what type of crying it is, and how close we are to where I'm going. If we're 10 minutes away or less, I don't pull over.

If we're more than 10 minutes, and he's just doing his fussy cry, I don't pull over if I can avoid it. If he's doing his screaming, "oh my god I feel like I'm going to die if you don't attend to me" cry, I pull over ASAP, because when he does this for more than a few minutes, he tends to start choking.

  • It depends on how loud she is, but I try talking to her in a soothing voice or turning up the radio to calm her down.  It also depends on how far we are from our destination.  I also bought an On the Go Sleep Sheep and it really helps to keep her calm in the car.  It was the best $20 I spent.
