Flying with kids

Can you guys talk to me about flying with kids?

Meg has a high-back booster at home.  Do I take this (which falls apart when carried), just the bottom portion of it, or a converitable?  I'll need something for her to sit in from the airport to the hotel.

Do I need to bring identification/birth cert for her?

Anything else I need to know?

I checked the airline and California carseat information but it didn't answer these questions.

Re: Flying with kids

  • From what I read about the booster like yours (which I have one too) is that the seat belt needs to be positioned right, if not using the back AND if there is no head rest then you need the back as well.

Oui! Now you got me thinking. DH wants to go to CO at the end of September and I would be flying back with two kids on my own. I didn't think about a car seat for Jo.

  • You don't need a birth cert for her. The only time I've heard of needing one is when they re lap kids that look close to two years old. You don't need the booster on the plane. I would check it. The airline shoul have a heavy plastic bag you can put it in. Or you can usually but a car seat check bag for $20 ish. You're supposed to get to check car seats for free and you can stuff a lot of other stuff in the bag! Oh and I'd bring the seat back.

  • Are you renting a car or is it just a hotel shuttle? She might not need the seat if it's just a shuttle.

  • How are you getting from the airport to the hotel?  If taking a shuttle, we normaly just have W ride with out his seat (bad mom) but in a car we rent a seat or bring one with us.

I alway have the birth certificate, but have only been asked for it once when he was an infant and I was traveling with him alone, with out his father.  This was on Jet Blue.

  • We are not renting a car and our hotel does not have a shuttle.  So, we will likely be paying for a shuttle or taxi.  I'll research that more.  If I don't have to bring it at all, I would be happy!  Chuck uses a wheelchair at airports, so between me pushing that and our carry-on stuff...I didn't anticipate needing a carseat too.

I'd take the highback booster and put it in a heavy plastic bag - which like Jill said, should be free.

Do I need to bring identification/birth cert for her? You don't HAVE to, but I do just to be safe.

Anything else I need to know?  At Meg's age, it should be fairly simple.  You may want to think about a CARES harness.  I know there are folks here who have them and would probably be willing to loan them.  Having one on Madelyn this last flight made me feel a lot better about not having her in a car seat on the plane.  William would have been thrown out of my arms, but at least Madelyn was safe :D

I checked the airline and California carseat information but it didn't answer these questions.

  • We set up towncar service for pickup/dropoff with the hotel. They had booster M used for no additional charge.  If you want the info let me know.

  • We have just always booked through the Disneyland Resort Shuttle.  Here is a link to the information.

If you are fine with her riding on your lap on the bus then you wouldn't need a booster.  We've always had good luck with using them.  HTH!

  • Just got home from a cross country travel with 3 car seats. Weee!!!

If you are checking a bag. Put the top part of the booster in your checked bag. Then you can carry on (don't even need to gate check) the bottom part of the seat. CA car seat laws are almost the same as WA, only I believe they only require a booster there until 7 not 8 like here (unless they changed it in the last year.)

Otherwise just carry the seat to the gate have Meg carry half of the seat.

If she has a ticketed seat and answers to her own name then no need for ID.

If you are only using the booster for a shuttle (not car rental or taxi) then you might not need the booster at all. Call the hotel or shuttle service in advance (sometimes they have them on hand and sometimes bus rules apply, as in she won't need a car seat at all, but you can still use one if you want.)
