Terrible night last night- Need opinions

I've been really sick all week with a bad cold.  Aches, pains, sore throat, stuffy, and I'm not taking anything but Tylenol and neti pot.  I felt especially bad last night and took my temp. and it was just over 100 (so not super high, but still high).  My paperwork from the doc. says " if you are between 4 and 6 weeks, a fever can be especially dangerous" and that I needed to call.  So last night I called the on call nurse, thinking that I was basically, "over-heating" my LO or something.  Nurse asks me a ton of questions and then says... "I think we need you to head into the ER, but let me talk to the on-call doctor" .  She comes back on the phone and cancels the ER idea and gives me a perscription for a Z-pack instead and says just to watch my temp, since it could just be a cold.

Opintions on this-  Does the warning about a high temp on 4-6 weeks relate to being an eptopic sign or is that a bad few weeks anyways to get a temp due to growing fetus?

Z-pack is a b class drug.  Think I should keep taking the whole prescribed amount or stop and keep the Tylenol up, since my temp has dropped some?  I may call my regular doc and ask on this.

Thanks for reading all this.

  • I'm sorry you feel so bad. My vote is to finish the Z-pack. A temp drop doesn't mean you've rid yourself of the infection and stopping early can cause more problems. If she wanted you to stop the pack when you felt better, she would have said so. I hope you feel better soon.

  • Ok, I'm a doctor but not an OB, so take what I say with a grain of salt. But that being said, I have no idea why they gave you a z-pack for what is most likely a virus (your symptoms all sound like bad virus, not a bacterial infection) and most docs I work with won't start antibiotics without first examining a patient. Unless they think you have pneumonia or some other bacterial infection (which doesn't match your symptoms), a z-pack seems a bit odd. I'd probably wait and call my regular doc.

  • Hmm, missed the part that you'd already started the z-pack. May be best to just finish it.

  • I don't have any advice but I hope you feel better soon. Maybe call back the office this morning and try to talk to a doc.

  • I took the first dose last night and just put a call into my regular OB doc to ask about finishing it.  I'd hate to be exposing my LO to some meds that aren't really even helping me.  We will see what they say.

  • I agree with CrazyLand, I'm a physician too (not an OB) and I don't see any reason to have started antibiotics.  Especially since no one actually examined you and had any idea why they were starting them.  A vast majority of febrile illness is viral anyways.  Sorry you had a miserable night :(

  • I'm sorry you feel crappy! I vote complete the Z-pack. Class b is safe. Keep up with the tylenol and neti-pot and get some rest.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  • No suggestions, but yuck, I hope you feel better real soon!

  • I think it's extremely irresponsible that they prescribed you antibiotics with no sign of bacterial infection, that makes me so mad! Since you've started it the best thing probably is to finish it at this point. Sorry you're not feeling well :(
