Washington Babies

It's official...

We've been living in Portland "temporarily" for a year now and last week DH's company asked us to come up with a package of what it would take to move us down there... this morning he gets to work and gets a call from the vice president asking if we would relocate for 12 months to Chicago! Holy crap, we definitely were not expecting that! We don't really have a choice... he's worried he could be laid off if he says no, or they will still try to permanently move us to Oregon. Most of the well paid, higher up employees have done this move to Indiana/Chicago (the companies headquarters) at the beginning of their career and at least it's "temporary" so they will pay all of our expenses and DH should get a big raise when we come back. It's just horrible timing! I'm freaked out to have a baby across the country and that I'll be stuck not knowing anyone all winter long because it's so cold and I'll have an infant. Not to mention my mom won't be 10 minutes away. I actually do think it will be a good opportunity for us and if we didn't have kids, I'd be so excited. I'm still excited, just scared too!

Okay, had to get it out somewhere... didn't want to put on Facebook because we don't know the details yet, other than it's happening.

  • Wow, that would freak me out too. I would totally prefer Portland to Chicago, but I am biased since that is where I grew up.   Atleat you have time before your dd to get settled, find a doc, and hopefully meet acouple people.  How soon do you need to move?  Will your Mom (parents) be able to come out after baby to help for abit?

It's looking like we'll be moving in 3-4 weeks! I'm sure my Mom will come out after the baby is born for a week or two, which will be really nice. Hopefully MIL will want to do the same after my mom leaves! :) It will just be scary when they leave, but I'm sure I'll survive... it's only a year!

Now we've got to figure out how to move back from Portland, empty our house and try to find good renters in 3-4 weeks!

  • Wow, I would be freaking out too! But like you said, it sounds like a great opportunity and Chicago is a great town. My cousin's wife grew up there, though she doesn't live there now. If you want me to connect you with her if you have questions, let me know.

  • I'm from Chicago if you have any questions I'd be more than happy to help out if I can. My email is LourdesAnnPhoto@gmail.com. Good luck though and you will love it!
  • I love chicago though!  My best friend lived in Roscoe Village, you should check out that area!  It is sort of the perfect mix of little neighborhood parks, restaurants and shops.  I would move to that area if I had the choice.  I know there are a lot of moms groups in the area and once you get the hang of public transportation I think you will really like it.  You HAVE to go eat at Cara Mio's!  Its this tiny BYO restaurant that I DIE for the gnocci, we go there every time I go to chicago!

Sorry your having to move away from family : (  Not good timing for you, I believe that northwestern has some great moms groups though.  Be sure to get yourself a really good pair of rain/snow boots!!

  • Sounds like a great opportunity, but definitely a little scary for you. It'll be such a big change. That said, I LOVE Chicago. Such a great city. It is cold in the Winter though. I have been there in November and lets just say I wore a lot of layers. I wish you and your family the best of luck.

  • Crazy! I'd be freaked out/excited too. I hope everything goes smoothly for you guys. I'm sure you'll settle in just fine, I hear nothing but great things about Chicago.

  • I can totally relate - it is scary! But, once your DH has the pay increase, then he can ask for more when you do move back. That's our plan. I have some friends who moved just north of Chicago (her husband takes the train into the city for work) and they love their area.

Chicago has fantastic museums and an awesome aquarium.

And, I am only 4 hours away. :)
