What a disappointment after my wonderful pre and postnatal care with the midwives.
For those appointments there was MAYBE 15 minutes wait (usually 0-5), Dr's office 1 hour. Those appointments were 45 minutes and this was 10 minutes long.
Dr didn't ask many questions (is baby sleeping through night? how often does he eat etc) or look at his records sent from the midwife (baby was 10lbs at 6 weeks and is 11lbs at 10 weeks- but 'he's on the percentile chart' (25%)).
Dr said I wasn't "ready" for birth control yet then asked me if I had had my period. I told him I had one day of bleeding yesterday but it stopped so I wasn't sure. He will not put me on BC (minipill) until I have my period. DH and I seem to be very fertile (I got pg while on BC pill and antibiotics) and I am worried about getting pg again.
He also had me worried that LO only has 3-4 dirty diapers a week because he should have 1 stool/day ideally. When I said the midwife said 1/10 days was okay he said that 1/day is better and the goal.
I think I need to find a new doctor which SUCKS because they all have huge wait-lists in my town ![]()
Re: Dr's Appointment Today
I'd be looking for a new doctor, even if it required putting my name on a waiting list. DD only has 2 stools a week, and our pediatrician said that's totally normal. The appointment didn't take too long, but we didn't have much of a wait and the pediatrician interacts fantastically with DD.
Also, like theaustins said, antibiotics counteract BC. If you're taking antibiotics, they recommend using a condom as a second form of BC since antibiotics make the pill pretty ineffective.

Meh. I'm 28 and married and LO is our first child- it was a surprise but not anything we were upset about (we were going to wait a couple more years for financial reasons). Antibiotics CAN counteract BC but from what I've heard and read from reliable sources (pharmacists etc) it is not extremely common (From Healthycanada.com "there have been case reports suggesting antibiotics may decrease how well your birth control pills work to prevent pregnancy. While this interaction is unlikely, for peace of mind, consider using an additional method of birth control (i.e. condom) for the rest of that cycle"). Anyone I've told IRL has said "So that really DOES happen?".
Fertile or not, I don't really see why I can't go on the minipill before I ovulate for the first time and risk getting pg again(yes I am like a teenager and I don't like condoms).
Oh, I'm not suggesting that you should've been using condoms; that's really none of my business and I'm sure you're thrilled to have an adorable son. That's just what I've always heard recommended to prevent pregnancy since antibiotics can increase the likelihood of getting PG on BC. I've known a few people to whom this has happened.

That sounds like a pretty crappy doctor. Definitely try to weasel your way in elsewhere. I hear you on the wait lists, but talk to your midwife and see if she has any friends in the biz. I got in with my current family doctor when my NP from student health asked nicely if they'd take me. If you can get a nurse practitioner, that might also be a great option with care more like the midwives.
My doc gave me the mini pill and said I could start it that day. I still haven't had a period. We hate condoms, too.
Your doctor seems unfamiliar with breastfed babies. They often don't poop every day. How can you possibly have a goal for that?
The only thing I can suggest for the long wait is try to get the first appointment of the day or the first after lunch. That usually helps.

List of Doctor's accepting new patients in our town OP
https://www.bluewaterhealth.ca/Home.aspx?PageID=212
The only problem is that they normally won't take a patient that already has a family doctor. If that is the case, you can inform your family doctor that you are leaving his/her practice in writing and then ask to see the doctors on this list. But I would only do this if you check with said new doc that they will take you on.
As for LO, I take DS to a fabulous pedi, Dr. Harleen Bhandal. I think she is taking new patients.
Our town is sorely in need of new family doc's that aren't 100 years old.

I find most doctors on the 'accepting patients' list are accepting them for a reason- on ratemds.com they have worse ratings than my current doctor. There are a few who seem to have good reviews (Dr. Suryavanshi) but overall... I saw Dr Bhandal when LO had jaundice about 4 days PP and I had a really bad experience but it may have just been that I was exhausted, hormonal and over-sensitive. I would really like to find a good family dr so that we could see the same person but that may not be possible.
We do have one new family doc who is not 100 years old and I have talked to one of his (happy) patients who said he told her to give her EBF baby a bottle of water/day and give her some prune juice if she went a few days with no dirty diapers.
I just want a family doctor who takes my concerns seriously, is knowledgeable about current breastfeeding recommendations, and explains their rational for decisions instead of patting me on the head condescendingly.
