Leapster Explorer or Leapster 2?

DS will be 3 1/2 this month and is really expressing an interest in this stuff. I figured it would be a great gift for him when the baby comes, but I have no idea which is better, why, etc? Which do you have and why do you like it? What kind of games do you like? I also noticed that the Leapster Explorer is running about $59 on Amazon right now, whereas the Leapster 2 is $39! Thanks!

  • I was in the same boat when my son was 3.5. Although it's not one of the choices you listed, I followed advice from my friends, and bought my son the Mobigo. He loves it and picked up on it immediately even though he really had no electronics experience. It's our go to toy for trips to restaurants and long plane flights!

  • I bought a used Leapster L-Max on ebay for $12 just to see if DS1 would be interested in it.  he'll be 5 next month.  And he's shown big interest in it. So has his little brother!  HAHA!! Oh the fights over it.

Anyway, for his birthday in Sept. we are getting him the Leapster Explorer. Which is the latest Leapster with a bigger screen.  And you can attach a small camera to it to take pictures and play around with the picture.  Unfortunately, you can't use the regular Leapster games with the Explorer, which is fine. It's at Walmart for $59, which is pretty good to me.

  • I think the leapster explorer's screen is much clearer and nicer than the leapster2. There's a huge difference and I'm glad I went with the explorer.

  • My kids looooove their Explorers.  I would go with that!  But, it looks like Lap Frog is coming out with the Leap Pad--like an iPad type thing.  That also looks cool!

  • We purchased a Leapster 2 last Christmas for DS.  He is now 4 yo and loves it.  He especially likes games related to tv shows/movies he's familiar with (Backyardigans, Toy Story, Cars).  It was one of the  best purchases we ever made for him.  DH suggests that you purchase a battery pack if you do go this way because it uses batteries up rather quickly.
