Postpartum Depression

do you feel more anxiety at night?

and is there anyone else having a lot trouble falling asleep? i mentioned to a therapist i feel anxiety only really around bedtime, which makes it super hard to fall asleep, and she made me feel like that was strange.  ive heard from other moms they feel that way at bedtime too, like hurry up and fall asleep so you can get rest before the baby wakes up.

Re: do you feel more anxiety at night?

  • This is not strange...this started to hit me like a train when DS was 7 months old and I am still dealing w/ it.  I couldn't fall asleep or stay asleep....it has totally sucked and I feel it has ruined my life and my first year w/ DS.  I also have a therapist and a pshyc., and neither one said this was abnormal.  That both said that it is normal and happens to a lot of women pp.  Mine is sooo bad that I had to quit nursing at 9 months and I take Serequel (600mg) and sometimes an Ativan or an Ambien.  It totally sucks and now I'm scared I will become addicted to the meds, but I can't make it on no sleep...so what do you do?!  If you are feeling anxiety (chest pounding, racing mind) the Ativan may really help you and so may the Serequel.  Hope this passes quickly for you, unlike me.  :-(
PPD/PPA Mom...it has been super hard, but I'm making it! Slow steps...

  • thanks. i definitely dont want to stop breastfeeding anytime soon. i just started a low dose of zoloft yesterday, but the shrink seemed so clueless about PPD she was looking up medicines online when i was in her office. she gave me a scrip for ambien and another sleep med. hopefully the zoloft will help me sleep bc i feel guilty taking ambien each night. i will def bookmark ativan just in case.

  • The anxiety hits me whenever i am not concentrating on something, so nights are a big part of it.  If you do not feel confident with your therapist, change doctors.  As soon as possible.  Trust in you doctor is a huge part of this battle.

  • YES!!!

I take 150mg of Luvox, 25mg of Doxepin (for a few more days then up to 50mg....taking it as a migraine preventative), 1mg Klonopin, and 3mg Lunesta.  And I lay here all freaking night listening to my husband, baby, and dog snoring and the rooster whose got his time clock all messed up crowing all night.  I asked the doc to prescribe a crowbar to knock me out and he just laughed at me.  I thought it was a legitimate request.

Anyways, to answer your question.........I am doped up to the max and still don't sleep.  Hope you have better luck!

    I ditto all of this.
  • YES! I'm exhausted all day and then cannot fall asleep stay asleep at night. When LO was initially born the first week was rough because I lost my mother shortly before finding out I was pregnant and I would sit in the nursery at night when I couldn't sleep sad about that leading to anxiety about the baby waking up. I still have my moment's with that, but overall my anxiety is focused towards the night--particularly with the baby fussy. She doesn't nap well and I'm exhausted and get anxious about MH at work the entire next day. I've found Ativan helpful, but I try to take sparingly because I've heard over time it becomes less effective.
