Baby Showers

OK, guest list just doubled.... (food ideas)

I am throwing a shower for the BF and told her 30 people, because that's all the venue will hold (already paid for/reserved).

She just emailed me some 'additional people she forgot'. I don't know what to do? I don't want to turn her down and I don't want to pay for a bigger place!

I need cheaper/less expensive food ideas. We were going to do chicken waldorf on croissants, fruit tray, cheese tray, veggie tray, and cupcakes.

Any suggestions?

  • "Friend, I'm really sorry, but I already told you 30 was my limit.  Both w/ the location space and w/ my budget.  I don't know what to tell you, but I simply can't accomodate more people.".

ETA: Remember, this is YOUR party that you are throwing for her.  And she's DOUBLING the list?  That's not right.  If it comes down to it, you can say "As I can't accomodate your list, I'm not going to be able to host the shower anymore".

  • What do you do?  That depends.

If invitations have NOT been sent yet, tell her she needs to cut her list to 30 and let you know the final list.

If invitations HAVE been sent, then you need to tell her that the facility is at its capacity.

It's terribly unfortunate that she has put you in this position, but please don't feel obligated to try to accommodate this ridiculous request.  Chalk it up to her hormones and move on.

I can't think of anything that would be less expensive.

You need to tell her that you have already booked and paid for the room, and unfortunately the room (and your budget) can only accommodate 30 people.

This!  It's not like she added 2 or 3 extra people. 30 is a lot of extra people to accomodate.  They must not be that important to her if she "forgot" about them when the first guest list was made.  Sounds like someone is looking to add a few more gifts to the pile.

  • I agree with the others on telling your friend that you can't accomodate the extras.  However, if you just can't do it, what about a pasta main course?  It can feed a lot of people fairly cheaply.

  • Also, if the venue will only hold 30 people, as a GUEST, I would be PISSED to show up and have it crammed w/ twice as many people.  You need to think about the guests too.

Excellent point.  It would suck to have to sit on the floor or stand for an entire shower.

Please don't go over your planned budget for this shower.  That simply isn't fair to you and rude of her to ask this of you.

  • I agree with all the PPs - I'd just tell her the deposit will be lost if you cancel and they you certainly won't be able to afford a bigger shower .

But, you did ask for cheap menu ideas so I'm going to echo the person who suggested pasta. Something like ziti is very cheap. It sounds like you're doing appetizers etc. - in which case, I'm really not sure how much less expensive you can get than cheese & veggie trays and croissants etc. Good luck!!! :)

  • For my baby shower my mother and MIL hosted. My mother brough a dish, MIL brought a sub, my aunt brough a dish, SIL brought a dish. The point is see if you can get one or two people to make a dish and bring it. Mother or the mom to be or mother of the father to be etc. Most people wouldn't mind bringing a dish. At least no one in my family ever minds bringing a dish to a party.

As hard as it is going to be I think you are going to have to tell the mother to be that you can not accomidate her extra 30 people. She basically has two options. Find someone else to through her a second how or a larger shower besides you. Second she pays for a larger hall. It would not be fair to force you to loose your dopiste and pay for a larger hall. It should be on her.

  • If the place only takes 30 you cannot put more in there because of fire code, they wont allow it.

I agree.  If she forgot 30 people, obviously they aren't that important to her.  Maybe someone is pressuring her to invite more family or something.  When someone threw me a shower, my mom kept wanting me to add her friends to the guest list.  It was silly because I didn't know them that well and they live 5 hours away, so they definitely wouldn't go.

  • What if you just did dessert?  I was planning a fancy party for a non-profit organization once and we had a small budget, but didn't want it to look cheap.  We ended up just doing desserts and it looked like a lavish spread!
