Toddlers: 24 Months+

Spinoff Poll Re: Christmas Trees

I've been debating doing one at all this year.  My son will be 15 months at Christmas and is currently getting into everything in sight.  What have been some of your experiences with toddlers and Christmas trees?  Is it worth the effort?

Re: Spinoff Poll Re: Christmas Trees

  • I bought a play yard (6 piece baby gate thingy) to put around the tree/presents if DD starts to get into it too much.

    Lazy?  Yes!

  • I have been thinking the same thing. DD is into everything!! She climbs on everything and everything still goes into her mouth. I have been looking for one of those gates on craigslist but nothing so far.  It doesnt' help our living room is small as it is so adding a xmas tree in here.....hmm.

I tried last year and DH wouldn't go for it. So I do doubt he will not want it.

  • I plan on putting one up.. perhaps not with all the ornaments this year but with some soft non breakable things.  I'm having DH tie it to the wall so it won't fall on him but I'm limiting what I put on for his safety.  I might keep the "snow" in the box before he tears it to look like pieces of cotton *sigh*.
  • Ours will be in an area that DD can't get to unless we let her in there.
  • I've been wondering the same thing. DH insists we'll have a tree, so I think it's just going to be ornament-free (not a problem, as we only have like 7 ornaments and have never put up a tree ).

  • Last year DS was about 20 months at Christmas and we had that trouble. We skipped a real tree and did a tabletop one in the middle of our large dining table. I'm glad we did though it was sad to skip it. Much much less work though!
  • It is a tough one.  DH just will not go for not having one and our house is just not big enough to have places DD does not go.
  • I'm having the same dilemma you are. The tree is one of my favorite things about decorating for Christmas, but I think I'm going to skip it this year, and plan for an artificial tree and non breakable ornaments next year by buying them after Christmas this year.?
  • Jack was 15m last Christmas and it was fine. We had to get him away from a couple ornaments last year by putting them up higher. It really wasn't an issue.
  • We're definitely going to have a tree.  IMO, it's not Christmas without a tree!

DD gets in to a lot of stuff but it seems as though she's pretty selective.  I think she'll be ok.  I'm honestly not that worried about it.  I'm more worried about her trying to open presents than I am about her getting in to the ornaments.

  • We didn't have one last year (we were in the middle of a move), and it sucked.  We're putting it up, and we'll get one of the play yards to put around it if it ends up being necessary.
  • We're just going to put a playyard around it and also will put soft, non-breakable ornaments on the bottom portion in case her go-go-gadget arms reach that far.
