re post from breastfeeding board: tongue tie--has anyone experienced this?

Forgive me if this has been asked but I havent been on the bump since LO was born. The Lactation Consultant told me today that he is having trouble latching because he is tongue tied. She suggested that I see my pediatrician to have it evaluated and possibly clipped.

Were supposed to go in tomorrow and if the doctor thinks that he is tongue tied, they will do the procedure there in the office. Has anyone else experienced a tongue tied baby and did you decide to clip or not to clip? I think the word "clip" is scaring me and LO is only a week old. Im just trying to gather as much information as I can so that I can make this decision. Thanks!

  • I noticed DS was tongue tied.  At his 1 week appt. the doctor said he could just clip the frenulum and it would take care it and save him a much more painful procedure when he was older.  It only took a couple of seconds and the worst part was holding him down during the procedure.  There was only a couple drops of blood and he was able to nurse right afterwards and didn't cry anymore.  We have a family history of being tongue tied and I didn't want him to go through surgery when it is such an easy fix now.  I know it's awful to think they are going to be in pain but it was over so quickly.

  • my sil's ds was born tongue tied last month. one doctor suggested they get him a speech therapist later in life, and another suggested getting him clipped. they opted for the clip bc apparently it doesn't hurt the baby much, if at all... and to them it was worth it (fixing the problem rather than letting their lo go on with eating and talking problems).

My first had this issue. It was at her 1 week appointment that i had her pedi clip it. BEST THING EVER!!!! She latched on great, but not right. I dreaded BFing, and had been told that it really was uncomfortable for a while until you were used  to it. But i knew somethig else was wrong. It was excrutiating pain. Like i was kicking my toes into the coffee table the whole time she nursed.

Basicaly her tongue didnt come out far enough so she was really latching with her gums and mashing my nipples. It was terrible.

Have them check your lo out, and if need be, clip it. It took all of 3 seconds and 1 itty bitty drop of blood. No biggie. Best of luck to you both!

  • My first daughter had a tied-tongue and she was having trouble latching. So much that before they caught the real issue the lactation nurse called my baby "lazy". I was blistered and in tears every time I tried to nurse. And since she was my first baby, it was very frustrating. But, thankfully, the pediatrician discovered the issue with her tongue while still at the hospital. He clipped it at the hospital. I was very nervous, because "clipping" anything just sounds scary and wrong. But, they did it in the nursery, she was back in less than 10 minutes, and latched on right away and things were a thousand percent better. I know a lot of pediatricians will not clip the tongue now, but I am PRO-CLIP 100%!!!! Besides, now she doesnt have to worry about looking funny when she wants to lick an ice cream cone or lollipop. The clipping was very minor, and in fact there wasnt even any blood.
  • My husband is tongue-tied and his mother never chose to have it clipped.  He's always hated it and had hoped our son wouldn't inherit it.  But sure enough, he did inherit it but the procedure was so simple it wasn't a problem at all.  I think we had it clipped around the time he was one month.  The dr had me swaddle LO to keep his hands down.  It took only a few seconds and there was barely any blood.  VERY, VERY SIMPLE procedure.  He was able to BF minutes later (dr suggested it to soothe him) and barely cried.  The way they described the pain from the procedure was like getting a paper cut.  It would hurt right away but go away almost instantly.  I would definitely recommend it!

  • Our pedi made an appt with an ENT for us on our first visit.  We had it done that day and  there was some blood, but I think he was crying  because he was hungry not because it was painful.  Also- one of my nurses in the hospital had her 8 year old daughter's tongue clipped and the 8 year old said it didn't hurt at all.  GL with your decision.

  • The moms I've talked to with babies that were tongue tied said that getting it fixed saved their breastfeeding - that it was like getting a whole new happy baby.

I wouldn't hesitate at all if it was my baby. I'd get it done ASAP.

  • I have heard that not getting the tongue tie issue fixed (ie clipped) can make it harder for kids/adults to make the correct movement with their tongues to speak w/out a lisp. They cannot connect to the roof of their mouths so they cannot properly make the d, t and other consonant sounds w/out the lisp.

  • With #2 we got her tongue clipped. I was worried. It was so fast and easy, my DH who was in the room sending a text message didn't even know they did it. They Dr clipped it and said "I will be back in a min or two to check on her then you can go." My DH said "great, when are you going to clip it." Dr said "I already did".   She cried from me holding her still, but there was only a drop of blood and then she was fine.  As a special education teacher I didn't want to worry about her having speech issues as she grew. I am glad we did it.
  • When I was still in the hospital with LO the nurse noticed she wasn't latching correctly and suggested the on-call specialist look to see if she was tongue-tied. She was, and they did the procedure to fix it in the nursery and it took a few minutes. It healed really well and she's been great at BF'ing ever since. Good luck!
