Separated abs?

Is there any way I can fix this? There is like a valley in my abs. It's a little creepy.

Re: Separated abs?

  • What are abs? Does everyone have them?

  • As far as I know..the short and long answer is 'no'.

Waiting at least 6 weeks or after a dr's visit is the reason to wait to work out, or start doing ab work.

Many people want to at least start ab work even earlier than working out-unfortunately, when you have a baby, the stomach walls (transaxle muscles) separate - they need time to 'fuse back together' before they are strong enough as muscles to be re-toned. If you don't allow them to fuse back-they never will. At least that is what I have been told by several of my pilate instructor friends (one is very very tiny and didn't konw this with her first-) she literally has a permanent separation where the stomach SHOULD be a whole unit - and therefore, could technically put her arm through there to her organs if that were possible.

If you have started doing core work -stop til you get the ok (there are these little tests you can do to see if your stomach muscles are strong enough).

Anyone out there-correct me if me and my pilate friends are wrong.

Once I poke through all my squishy they are there and rock hard!! There's just a Grand Canyon running through them.

So is there a chance that it could be like this forever? I haven't tried to tone it (too much damn work), but I am getting a little tired of the flabbyness and would like to try and make it a little better.

Yes I agree, never heard of this before. :)

Mine started to get better when I started to run again...I noticed a difference almost right away.  Don't know if you are a runner at all, but HTH.

I wonder if walking would help? I am definitely not a runner, but I like taking walks.

  • I have diastatis recti (separation of the ab muscles). Nothing will really fix it, even surgery isn't a guarantee.

That being said, gentle exercise helps a lot. Regaining the strength in the muscles really helps stabilize everything.

  • I'm a Pre- and Post-natal Pilates Specialist, and I've seen a diastasis many many times. I even had one! Sounds like that's what you're experiencing. It can definitely be discouraging, but there are measures you can take to heal the separation. First, I would NOT recommend doing random exercises or even abdominal work. You could make it a lot worse and more difficult to correct. You really ought to go to an exercise specialist with knowledge of healing a diastasis. Second, you might want to get a splint to help heal the gap. Check out Julie Tupler and the Lose your Mummy Tummy system. It's pretty straightforward. Julie is a wonderful resource and an RN. She developed a method and splint that helps mommies fix their post partum bellies. Her studio is in NY, but her website has lots of great info. Hth!! PM me if you need more help or info!!
