Cleaning baby's toys????

Hey everyone....Just a quick question. My sister in law gave us a bunch of toys for LO but they need to be cleaned. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for how to clean plush and hard plastic toys that can't be submerged or laundered. TIA.

Re: Cleaning baby's toys????

  • put them in the freezer for 24 hours!! kills most bacteria!

  • we use babyganics toy & highchair cleaner. for hard toys i just spray it on there and wipe it off with a paper towel. for plush toys that aren't machine washable, i spray onto a paper towel and just wipe it down.

  • another idea is to put them into a pillow case and throw in the wash. my theory is that if it doesn't make it in the washer i don't want DS chewing on it anyway

  • I bought some toys at a garage sale, so I took them out in our driveway, sprayed them with spray bathroom cleaner (you can get earth friendly or baby friendly products and it's washed off and dried), hosed them off, and then let them dry in the sun on the back deck for 24 hours.

    Worked pretty well for me.

  • I clean all plastic toys with a vinegar/water mixture.  I use a spray bottle and paper towels for anything to big for the sink but if it fits in the sink I submerge it (even if it says not to). FYI if it has a squeaker (Sophie etc.) they aren't kidding when they say don't submerge...oops.

Anything plush goes in the washer with baby clothes. As PP said if it can't make it through the washer it won't make it with baby.

  • Freezing does not kill all bacteria (although it sounds like a good way to kill dust mites that live in stuffed animals without sending them through the wash). I don't think there is any one answer, and I wouldn't use any chemical cleaner. Maybe just a little dishsoap, a good brush, and thorough rinsing.
