Breastfeeding

am I a horrible mother

My milk supply is very low...I get only 2oz at a time, so we suppliment with formula a lot.  I've tried all the LC suggestions and all my friends suggestions to increase my supply, but nothing helps.  I'm sooo over breastfeeding, but my husband insists I keep trying!  I'm just done with all of this.  Everytime I bring it up to my husband that I want to stop BF we get into a huge arguement, so I keep it up just for him.  I really don't want to keep going through this, knowing I can't provide enough for my daughter is so frustrating.  I feel like a horrible mother for feeling this way.

Re: am I a horrible mother

  • No, you're not a horrible mother! BFing is a hugely personal choice so don't feel bad about whatever choice you make.  I do agree that your husband's opinion should weigh in on the decision.  Producing milk is a mental thing as well as physical.  It takes confidence.  If you're overly stressed about not producing enough, you probably won't.  If you supplement with formula, that's fine, but if you don't pump during those times you're feeding formula, your body will produce less milk because it thinks your baby doesn't need it.  So if you nurse then give her to your husband to top her off with formula, pump the whole time she's taking the bottle...even longer if you can.  That should work to increase your supply.  Good luck!

  • No, of course you aren't a horrible mother.

I find it concerning that you are seeking validation from a bunch of internet strangers on that though. Unless you are just posting an empty loaded question to get views.

Find out why your DH is adamant about BF. It's not really worth getting into "huge arguments" over, but it will depend on what his reasoning is whether he has a point.

BF shouldn't be a drag on the mother. It's your body and if you aren't happy BF, then your baby is going to eventually pick up on that.

  • you're not a horrible mother! you're awesome!

have you seen your dr about the issue? there are a couple of medications but more importantly, they may also be able to tell you how to talk to your husband about it.
