New to The Bump

FSH Question from a newbie.

I am a healthy 29yo career-woman, happily married for going on 2 years.  Our plan was to wait 5 years or so to have children.  I have been on BC for the last 12 years (Nuvaring for the last 5).  Over the last year I started feeling sluggish, having some night sweats, was unable to lose weight, having some sexual changes, etc.  Susupected my horomones were off and went to a new OBGYN to get checked (blood test).  Turns out my estrogen/ progesterone/ testosterone levels were all dreadfully low.  The doc seemed much more concerned however, that my FSH was 15 (coincidentally, checked on day 3 of my cycle).  He ordered me off BC and scheduled testing for 1.5 months later.  Since then, I have have my first, unmedicated cycle (I'm charting) lasting 23 days, ovulating on day 12 with an 11 day luteal phase, and a b**ch of a period.

All online FSH research that I have done online has really gotten me (and the hubby) frightened and sad.

My question is this.  I am obviously ovulating on my own now.  I am off BC.  What are the chances that now that my horomones are doing their own thing, that my FSH drops to an acceptable level to concieve.  When faced with the possibility of not being able to have our own, the hubby and I have decided that we'd better not waste any more opportunities.

Re: FSH Question from a newbie.

  • Are you sure you're ovulating? I don't want to make you worry more but I thought I was fine (we knew my DH was not), I even had the line when I used the ovulation kit and my ovaries enlarged on day 14 like they were supposed to (fertility clinic did an U/S) but when I went for my progestern (sp?) test a week later, I found out I was not actually ovulating. My fertility Dr said the only way to know for sure is to take the proges. test a week after you suspect you ovulated. On the bright side, I took Femara and it helped me ovulate. The first time I ovulated, I conceivedBig Smile. Now we're expecting a beautiful baby in Oct. Good luck and remember, They've come a long way in fertility. If you want a baby, there is almost always a way.

  • Congratulations!  I hope that I have your luck....

You make a good point.  I'm pretty sure I ovulated.  I was charting, and I experienced the temperature rise for 11 days prior to AF with ideal cervical fluid around what I suspect to be ovulation.  You're right though, I should be sure.  I have my charts ready for my OBGYN later this month.  Perhaps he will want to test me too.

Did you also have elevated FSH?

  • I know my levels were off. IDK which way. I was pretty upset after my levels were taken. I had a low egg count on one side and  Dr. told me my eggs were "old"  I cried when he said that. I hope your Dr is less harsh. (FYI I was 33 when we went in, I didn't think I was abnormally old to concieve. And also, we used IUI because of DH's issues)

  • Your FSH was taken once, while on BC, and it's not the end-all and be-all of ovarian reserve.

There is just as good a chance as not that your FSH levels are fine. If not, you can also get Inhibin B and AMH levels done to get a better idea of ovarian reserve.

In short, all is not lost. And you have a LOT of options.

  • Thank you Dr.L!  That's exactly what I hoped to hear.  I go back on Aug.17 to get my horomones, including FSH, checked again after 1.5 mo off BC.  I'm trying to be optimistic and hoping for a much better outcome. If not, I will ask for the Inhibin B and AMH tests.
