Tell me about your prenatal vitamin!

At my appointment today my doctor gave me a bag with a bunch of prenatal vitamin samples in it. I checked out all the samples and they scared the crap out of me because of how large the pills were. So I asked her if I could continue to take my Target Brand prenatals. She said yes as long as it has DHA in it. Mine obviously do not so I need to go out and get more vitamins. I'm a little torn though because my bestfriend just had a baby and took the same prenatals that I am all throughout her pregnancy and they didn't have DHA in them. So I was just wondering what your doctors have told you and if your prenatals have DHA in them?

Re: Tell me about your prenatal vitamin!

  • I have the nature made prenatal +DHA.  I got them before seeing my doc b.c the DHA promotes brain growth.

They aren't that huge and are easy to swallow - and they don't make me nauseous.

  • I have the VitaFusion prenatal gummies... can't swallow pill person here.  They have the folic acid, DHA, and a little of Vit A and C... They have no calcium or iron.  I drink tons of milk and my Dr. tested my iron through blood work and everything came back fine, so I'm okay to take these.  These are $10 for 90 gummies at Wal Mart.  They really actually taste like gummy worms too...
  • I take Vitafusion gummy prenatal vitamins too and I found them at Target.  I also cannot handle large pills, so I opted for gummies.

This just gave me a huge craving for gummies!!!!!

I take PR Natal (generic prescription). There are two pills (one regular, and one DHA)- they are pretty big though...I do think it would be a good thing to go with what your doctor said and get vitamins with DHA.

  • I used to take the Target prenatals. Now I take the Rainbow One prenatals, which I like but they're really big.

Neither have DHA in them, so I went to Target and bought the up&up DHA prenatal supplement and take it separately. It's not a very big pill, especially compared to the Rx prenatals with DHA my doctor gave me samples of.

Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
  • I just take the One-a-Day prenatal w/the addit DHI/EPA gels. It's got both bottles in the box.

  • I take Vol-Plus (generic brand) w/ Calcium, Iron, Folic, but no DHA. I was somewhat surprised that they even make prenatal without DHA these days. But my OB said DHA is more necessary during the 3rd trimester than any other. She also said most over-the-counter vitamins are OK as long as they have Folic. I am taking EPA/DHA as a separate supplement though - only thing my OB cautioned me on was to make sure it was purified of mercury.

I was taking these too...but my OB just called me in a prescription kind...they are called Prenate Essentials.  They have LOTS of DHA in them.  They are big, but very easy to swallow (soft capsule and have a flavor to them so they don't taste bad).  They haven't upset my stomach at all.

This, sort of. I take the generic One-A-Day with DHA from CVS. Both bottles come in one box. The price was much cheaper. They have a sort of vanilla flavor so it doesn't have a horrible aftertaste.

  • My good girlfriend is a Naturopathic Doctor so I've been taking the prenatals she recommended. I take 2, one is Nordic Naturals Prenatal DHA and the other is by Douglas Laboratories and is a prenatal as well.

Costco sells Nature Made - Prenatal + DHA it's what I was taking before. I would definitely be sure to get the DHA, maybe you can buy one with DHA and continue the one you're on so they aren't wasted?

  • I take Prefera OB+DHA.  She wrote me a script for it, costs $25 bucks a month w/ insurance.  But...I can stomach it!

  • I'm taking supplements from Standard Process, I get them from my Chiropractor.
  • I take GNC PN pack. It's 3 pills but I love it. You can take them at different times if they upset your stomach all at once. I have a gnc card so once a month I can get buy one get one and they end up being about $15 a month. My OB said they are just as good as a script.

I've been taking these for while. Even when not pg, I can't stomach One-A-Day or the like. These stay down.

  • I take the VitaFusion gummy PNVs.  I have a super sensitive stomach and regular vitamins tend to upset it so I started taking these.  I brought them to my first appointment and my OB said they were fine as long as I was taking calcium (I take the Target brand of Viactiv) and my iron levels were okay, which they are.

I also take the PreNatal VitaFusion gummy vitamins.  Usually pill vitamins make me sick to my stomach.  I also have problems digesting a lot of dairy, so I have been taking the VitaFusion calcium/vitamin D gummies too.  They are excellent!

  • I am taking Folcal DHA (generic). It's prescription only, and even generic, it's pretty expensive. :(
  • I switched from Spring Valley prenatals(purchased at Walmart, I think) to the Nature Made prenatals with DHA.

I'm having an easier time taking them since making the switch. The NM prenatals are liquid softgels, so they are alot easier to swallow and don't smell as bad.

  • I'm taking Prefera OB + DHA. Since there is no "generic" my insurance co-pay was $45/mo. So far no problems with them :-)
  • Why can't you just take a fish oil supplement? They are usually gelcaps which are easier to swallow than an even bigger prenatal. I use Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega.
