Parenting after 35

hot dogs... <->

OK,

 I know i'm just getting back into this preggers-game; been out for 14yrs...

But, why is it again that some dr's don't want us to eat hot dogs?  Just wondering... Hope it's not a dumb question...

When I was preggers with my DD in 96-97, this was not on the list...

Thanks :-)

  • Listeria.  Same as with cold cuts.

    If you cook 'em thoroughly right before you eat them, they should be perfectly fine.  :)

    This. I ate many during both of my pregnancies, and kids are fine. I never got sick. Congrats!

  • Listeria.  Plus high levels of nitrites/nitrates and sodium.  Still had one once a week with DD.

    Unless you are like a friend of mine, who prefers her hot dogs uncooked (Let me just say YUCK YUCK YUCK!).  She ended up finding some fake veggie dogs to eat while pg.

    DD1 is 3, DD2 is 1.

  • Do you guys have the new naturals line in the US?? There are no additives, packed with: Pork, Water, Sea Salt, Vinegar, Cane Sugar, Cultured Celery extract , Spice, Dehydrated Garlic, Smoke. I can't take the taste of regular hot dogs, just butcher shop made and these showed up in Walmart and I love the taste, they don't sit in your stomach. Schneiders makes them here.

    I doubt you'd eat them raw, but remember to cook them well. I didn't heat my lunch meat, but I did the safe food handling techniques. Washed hands, refrigerate immediately, avoid cross contamination, etc.

    And yeah, some things are different from 14 years ago, some things haven't changed. No question is silly, we're not the tri boards!

  • When I was pg with LO, I craved all-beef juicy jumbo hotdogs and ate them throughout the pregnancy.  Those and Reuben Sandwiches.  Just make sure they are fully cooked and hot when you eat 'em and you should be ok.

  • Like everyone else said, make sure they're fully cooked.

    My 1st tri, the only food I could tolerate was absolute junk: hot dogs, Combos, cheese curls, and meatball sandwiches. Trying to eat anything remotely healthy was enough to put my stomach in knots.
