Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

12m old co sleeping...

My son wont sleep in his crib, so he still co sleeps. Last time i tried to put him in it he ended up jumping out, luckily he didnt hurt himself, but im scared he will do it again. Seeing as i have another one on the way, i would really like to get him used to his crib, or maybe a toddler bed (?) before the new baby gets here, anyone have tips on doing this?? Any suggestions at all are greatly appreciated.

Re: 12m old co sleeping...

  • Do you have room to put a toddler bed next to your bed? Him being able to jump out of his crib would be enough for me to be scared to try to put him back in without like, a ceiling on it or something, lol.

  • I may have to move my bed around to do that, but it might be worth it. I am TERRIFIED he will jump out again, but actually hurt himself unlike the first time.
  • Why is your siggy pic so huge????

  • Hmm, has he ever slept anywhere other than in your bed? Wondering if it's that he's not with you, or if he just doesn't like the crib..
  • Im not sure "/ I made it a while ago, he is around 5 months in that picture, i keep trying to change it but it sends me to an error page.
  • Yes, i actually have gotten him used to his crib a few times. Problem is, his daddy works night shift and is off fridays and saturdays, everytime dh was off Jordyn wouldnt sleep in his crib because of it, so come Sunday night i had to try to get him used to it all over again, this was a weekly thing. But then he jumped out and i havent done it since.
  • Maybe try the toddler bed next to yours (or depending on what your setup is like and whether or not you have a toddler bed yet, maybe you can try just his crib mattress on the floor next to yours).

I wish I could be more help.. I'm actually lurking a bit here because my girls are only 9 months old. But I like "looking ahead" to see what to expect..

  • Another option would be just to let him continue to sleep in your bed until he is a little older (as a transition to a toddler bed would be easier then) and you could always put the new baby in a co-sleeper like the Arm's Reach.

  • If he can get out of his crib it would probably be best for you to do a toddler bed. You may even have to spend a long time putting him down or even laying in his room until he falls asleep, but eventually he should get it. I wish I had some better advice for you but the only thing I can really say is to try to make it a priority to get him in his own bed. It's just going to get harder and harder, especially when you have a new little one. Do the work now before you new little one comes. Best of luck.

  • Thank you! im definitely willing to put in the work, i just wasnt sure if a toddler bed would work since hes still young, but i think that will be the best option, and we will have to work at it until he gets it. Thanks again!
  • If you do not want the new baby and your older baby both sleeping in your bed, then you definitely need to figure out a solution at this point. I know that you're nervous about putting your LO back into his crib, but I have a few questions:

1.) Is his crib mattress on the lowest setting? I know that all babies are different, but it seems like it'd take quite a bit of strength for a one year old to jump out of a crib where the mattress is on it's lowest setting.

2.) Have you ever heard of a crib tent? It would be a way to insure that he cannot get out of the crib during the night.

3.) Have you tried bringing his crib into your room? Maybe if you bring his crib into your room and transition him first into sleeping in his own crib and then transition the crib back into his own room.

  • Yes his crib is on the lowest setting, i was surprised he got out so i checked to make sure. I have not heard of a crib tent. His crib is rather bulky, it wont fit in our room with our king sized bed, if i went with that option i would have to use a  toddler bed.
  • Is there room in his room to put a twin sized mattress on the floor? That way you could lay with him while he falls asleep and then let him sleep there alone when you go to bed. It might be a nice transition between co-sleeping and sleeping alone. It also solves the climbing out of the crib problem. Just make sure to baby proof his room really well now that he'll be able to get in and out of bed.
