I think I broke my foot

Not kidding, my mom and I were walking down the side walk and there was a eye hook screwed into the cement. I walked right into it. Full force. I've never been in so much pain in my life. I can't even walk, I kind of limp and can drag my foot on my heel.

Its totally swollen and purple, and I can't move my toes at all no matter how hard I try.

I've never broken anything, but I called my OB and asked her if I should go to the hospital and see if its actually broken. She said they won't do anything most likely because I'm still so early on in pregnancy they won't do an xray, so they might just cast it blindly if they think it looks bad enough. But I don't want a cast. I'm thinking of just waiting it out, if its still bad in a week I'll go.

Does it sound broken?

Re: I think I broke my foot

  • If it's purple, swollen, and bruised I'd have it checked out. Likely they won't do much for you but at least they can do some assessing and see if you might need a cast...or they could give you a walking air cast. You definitely don't want to leave it alone if it is broken though!

  • Either go to ER or to urgent care.  When I badly sprained my ankle, I got a great walking cast, which is likely what they will do, and you really should have something if it's that bad to stabilize.
  • I might see if the swelling goes down tonight after some tylenol and sleep and maybe its just jammed. But I kind of have a feeling its not. I've jammed my toe before and this is the worst I've ever felt

  • Owww!! I have no advice but I really hope you stop hurting soon, that sounds highly unpleasant. Hugs!

Thanks Squish. It kind of feels like hitting your funny bone. But worse, and constant pain.

Did you get the PM I sent you ?

    No problem!

  • I'm sorry PK!  I know that they won't give you drugs or an x-ray, but it might be a good idea to get a walking cast or something to stabilize it.  I'm like you, in that I'd wait 'till tomorrow if the swelling doesn't go down enough.  But it's probably a good idea to go sooner than later!  I had a foot/ankle sprain that has caused me problems for 10 years b/c I didn't take care of it.

  • I hurt my foot about three weeks ago. At first I tried 'walking it off' and just seeing if it would be okay... it happened on a Friday and by Monday I went to the doc. They gave me a figure-8 aircast to stabilize my foot and ankle, and crutches. : They suck. I was told it's okay to get an x-ray as long as you're wearing a lead apron, but regardless they wanted me to wait until 4 weeks post-injury to x-ray. I guess when it's fresh they can't see small fractures, but later they can by the calcification. HTH.

In the meantime, alternate icepacks (20 min at a time) and warm water with espom salt in it. That should decrease the swelling some.

  • Oh no! I don't have any words of advice, but just wanted to send my sympathy to you and your foot. Hope you feel better soon!

  • I'd get it checked out.  It sounds pretty bad.  If you don't treat it and it is broken, you could make it worse in the long run.

  • Ice and elevate!  I did something similar this spring, and it wasn't broken, but I pulled the tendon almost off the bone.  It was purple and swollen.   I had to wear an air cast for a few weeks while it healed, the dr. stressed that if I didn't wear it and I rolled foot again, the tendon would pull all the way off and that requires surgery!!  I would get it checked out just to be safe!
