Random Question......about drinking while on the job...

DH and I were having a discussion the other day and something was brought up about how in some parts of the US it is not a big deal to go out to lunch have a beer then return to work. He said he thought it was pretty common up North. Do people do that where you live? I can say I would probably be fired if I ever did that and I know for a fact DH would be! However if not, I would sooo have a margarita somedays!

Re: Random Question......about drinking while on the job...

  • well that title should not of really said "on the job" but you know what I mean.

  • I have always been a big drinker, but only drank at lunch once, when I was out with a large group of Europeans and they ordered bottles of wine.  I don't think it happens often in big companies.  I worked in corporate finance, but often traveled with sales people, never really saw them drink at lunch, unless playing golf or something.  Usually saved it for happy hour.
  • It was never a big deal at my job (when I worked outside of Boston).  We needed it when everybody was getting laid off back in 2001.

  • My company's policy is that one alcoholic drink with a meal is acceptable.  (When we're on travel that's what we're allowed to expense with a meal as well).  I don't see the big deal about a beer at lunch and wouldn't think twice about anyone doing just that.  Coming back to work sloshed is an entirely different discussion.

  • I'm a teacher...no way in HELL would that fly!  I think it depends more on the job than on the region of the country, but I could be wrong. Drinks

  • I would be fired.  MH's job has parties during the day for special occasions which sometimes involves alcohol.  It is definitely not an every day (or even month) occurance though.
  • I guess I should clarify, I live in Oklahoma now, but have worked for the same big corporation in the pacific northwest and in So Cal as well and didn't see a big difference regionally in that.

  • We used to be able to do that and it never got out of hand. Once the new CEO came on board, that all stopped though. We do still have alcohol at "some" work events (Grand Opening in the new building, Christmas parties, etc.).
  • Wherever I've lived, it's been totally the norm.  It might have to do with the type of company, more than anything.

I've always worked for start-up tech companies, so it's a lot of "young" energy, and the whole "work hard/play hard" combination.

At my last (I worked FT up until DS was born, and do PT work from home (1200 miles away)) since) job, we would get beers at 5 pm, and have a few while we finished working (until 7, 8, 9 pm).

It was just the environment in the companies I worked for.  Now, that being said, ONE beer at a Friday lunch...not 4 martinis or anything!  Also, I've been in event planning for YEARS, so there have been a large handful of $3K nights at champagne bars, etc. when technically, on the job.

  • Well when I lived in NYC I worked at a law firm and it was pretty common for any visitor/newbie/client to get taken to lunch and that meant "with wine". Yep, back to work from 2-God knew when...

It is much rarer in Australia, here clients will generally either just have coffee if its not after work, or if they have a drink (when you're expected to do the same) it will be after work.

Or it will be a bigger thing like a client's day at the footy where its beer all day all round.

I think in law firms it is very much "as long as it doesn't affect your work". So if people could TELL you'd been drinking it would be frowned on, but if not then that's fine. I happen to know I just can't work as well after a glass of wine so I avoid it which has led to many instances of being thought pregnant LOL?

  • MH sometimes has drinks at lunch with other lawyers.  In the LA office one of the partners he worked for had a bar in his office and they would have happy hours on Fridays sometimes.
  • Well I have been told it is ok to have a beer with lunch at my previous job.  However I could never do it.  There are a few people that did, I just didn't feel right doing it.
