Cloth Diapering

FFS: another laundry/sleeping question

I'm almost at my wits end.

So, I finally figured out if I decrease the number of diapers i'm washing at a time PLUS increasing the amount of detergent I'm using, my inserts (mostly MF) come out perfect... no smell at all.

HOWEVER, now my pockets smell like soap!

How is it possible that my inserts can wash completely clean, but the detergent scent is still in my pockets?

We use the Dropps that is on sale on Baby Steals all the time.

Do I need to change detergents? If so, please recommend yours. It has to be something I can buy at the supermarket or on amazon. I considered making our own, but i'm a little scared of Borax. I have nowhere to store chemicals and the baby is about to start crawling.

ETA: Also - i'm having leaking issues when she naps. It has nothing to do with having to strip or anything. She sleeps on her stomach, and when I get her, she's ALWAYS leaked out the top of the diaper. The middle to front of the insert is SOAKED and the back of the insert is dry - so the pee isn't going up the insert, it's just going out the top once the front of the insert is at capacity.

Someone please give me advice. we'll do whatever we have to, I just don't want to stop CDing. It was never like this before her cast, and i'm getting SO frustrated.

My only non-option is changing out our stash. I can switch what we use for inserts, but I can't get a whole new stash (ie: get fitteds/etc.). We use pockets (mostly BG 4.0 - which worked fine for us before she went into her cast - and FB OS) and a few GroBaby/Via - which have the same issue for me (in terms of leaking out the front because the pee doesn't go to the back).

I know i don't have the only belly sleeper. What do you ladies do?!

  • As far as laundry goes, we use Rockin Green.  I did notice yesterday when I went to put things in the dryer that my wet bag (with black PUL, so easy to see) had tiny sudsy bubbles on it.  I didn't take the BG 4.0s to smell them to see if there was still detergent left on them, I just ran another rinse, which seemed to do the trick.  I wonder if it's something with the PUL.

Are you running enough rinses? I would try running an extra rinse.  Even if that means a third or fourth.  It won't hurt the MF inserts.

I've seen A LOT of ladies on here recommend using prefolds trifolded in pockets instead of MF inserts.  You can reduce/eliminate compression leaks with cotton.  You could also fold the front of the prefold down when inserting into the pocket to target her wet zone.

  • Are you using the grovia AI2s?  If so, you can turn the insert around so that the wide part is in the front.  This works great with our tummy sleeper.

  • I had no idea what Free For Shipping had to do with laundry.... but now that I read your vent you must mean the FFS other meaning.  :)

I use Tide Original and have no problems with smell.  If it smells a little like soap I just give another rinse and it works.

  • For soap, we use tide. Gets things clean and we no longer have stink issues. As far as the leaks, try folding the insert over in the front, so it's doubled up. Have you tried hemp? It's amazing how much pee a hemp insert can hold. I use a microfiber insert on top of hemp and rarely have a leak.

  • I second trying stuffing your pockets with prefolds.  They absorb so much better than the mf inserts.

  • if you stuff with prefolds, do you just use regular prefolds, or do you use a hemp prefold?

is GMD still THE brand around here, or is there another type of PF i should look for?

I just use regular cotton prefolds.   I use my GMDs.  They seem to work better than the other brand I have from Nicki'sDiapers.com.  HTH

  • We use a combo of RnG and the homemade detergent. I keep detergent on top of the dryer, or on a shelf above the w/d, so I'm not worried about DD ever getting into it. I think your problem would def be worth a detergent switch!

For naps, we had the same problem with pockets, no matter how they were stuffed. So all her naps now are in a prefold/cover or fitted/cover. But I had all those things already and just make sure that's what she's in for a nap.
