Does anybody have either of these from the IKEA Trofast line? We're thinking of getting them for our playroom, and connecting the pieces with a countertop so that it can double as a play area and desk later on (I know they're not level). We have an Expedit bookcase already, but I'm hoping the bins/shelves will make this better for storing a variety of toys and art supplies. Any reviews? Thank you!
Re: IKEA Trofast, anyone?
My cousin had these. The ledges on the bins break. I think the plastic is pretty brittle, and not the best for little kids getting them in/out of the shelf thing. (her kids are 4, 3, and 1)
Have it and love it. And I can think of 4 other friends that have it too. None of us have ever had issues with the bins (although they look like they *would* break. But they haven't).
I love that you can mix and match bin sizes according to your needs. And you can easily (and inexpensively) buy more/different bins or shelves if needed.
I also love that when everything is put away, the overall look is clean and neat. And she can take a bin out and play with it then quickly dump everything back in for quick cleanup.
I have this system in our playroom and really like it. I put a picture on the outside of each bin so when the kids pick up they know what goes where. Our 3 yo has a little problem getting the bins back in if he takes one all the way out, but the 5 yo does it fine.
I think the problem with the ledges breaking is on the white system. On the white one for some reason they have screwed on tracks and before I bought it I read these had a history of coming off. The wooden groove tracks on the natural colored one don't have this problem. My only other comment is that I recommend strapping at least the tall unit to the wall. It doesn't weight much and if a child tried to climb it or even just pulled out all of the bins a bit it could topple. I believe it came with straps for this.
