24 mo blood draw and urinalysis...

Much, much better than his 12 month.

We went in this morning for his blood draw and urinalysis, and by we I mean DH took M because last year's experience made me a wreck. They stuck M multiple times in each arm, he screamed, they attached a bag to his junk to collect urine, he screamed some more and they sent us home.

It was a million kinds of suck!

So I stayed home this morning and everything went swimmingly - figures. M sat still in DH's lap and they managed to get blood on the first stick.

Now just waiting for M to pee in his bag so we can run it back to the lab.

Re: 24 mo blood draw and urinalysis...

  • This is making me nervous... is that normal protocol? The urinalysis part especially.

I have a confession to make... Sydney never had her initial blood draw. There was confusion over whether we had to do it or not, then they gave me a new script to get it done and then the nurse screwed up and put the same date for the expiration. Then we switched Pedi's. It just got overlooked by everyone. But obviously... someone still remembers.

Glad Mikey did so well. I would have been a nervous wreck too. Glad your DH took him by himself and saved you the potential disaster.

  • Poor little man!   May I ask.. what are they testing for?  Sounds like a bunch of yuck.

C had to have his junk bagged too when we were at the ER around age 4 months.  It was weird.   They cut a hole in a diaper and taped the bag into the hole then strapped on his diaper.  Oddest thing I'd ever seen.

  • Aaron had bloodwork at 9 months (not 12) and has never had a urinalysis. Not sure how we'll manage that. I'm barely able to force feed him the antibiotics for his ear infection--so putting a baggie on his weenie doesn't seem easy!

Don't know how normal it is. I asked after last years disaster and it seemed like like it was a 50/50 thing. I'm sure Sydney will be just fine. I think part of what made last year so hard was M's chunk as it's harder to find veins. I think it's easier when they're older and thin out.

Lead, anemia and other stuff with the blood. Not sure what they're doing with the pee.

It's really not that tricky. It's a special bag with a little hole and surgical tape attached to it. Works best with two people, but not as weird or messy as it seems it might be... unless there's poop involved :P
  • Okaaaaaayyy... now I understand. Obviously I did not read your OP that clearly. I thought you meant they cathed him. YIKES! The latter description sounds much more reasonable.

Yeah, no cath. When the pedi  told us what had to be done last year I nearly passed out, but was super relieved that it's just the bag-on-the-junk deal.
  • I have a really... interesting mental image of that baggie.  What an odd contraption!

I hope everything comes out clear!

  • Since M has been so sick this year, we are pros at the blood draws and the taped on baggie.  Compaired to the blood draw, the baggie is nothing.  Have them put the baggie on first and then go for the blood. They are so upset and mad at the blood draw, they usually pee.  Make sure that they send two phelbotomists.  It takes two people to hold LO's still.  And if they look the least bit unsure about sticking your baby, ask for someone else.  The ped nurse on the floor was the best.  She could hit a vein in a plastic baby doll.

Do you live in an area with known high lead levels, or does your DH work around lead or something?  I know the pedi checks our zip code against a reference list, but to my knowledge DD has never had blood drawn for lead testing.

Also, the baggie thing intially made me glad I have a girl, but then I started thinging about what a pain it would be to collect a specimen from her, since she isn't potty trained yet. Anyone know how they do it for girls?

    DD1 is 3, DD2 is 1.
  • Good job M!

I thought they only start doing urinalysis at 4 y.o. check-up. J. just had his first one done.

Haven't heard that there's a lot of lead around here and our townhouse was built in the 80's, so after they stopped using lead paint. Who knows?

And I have no idea how they collect for girls. I think I asked last year but I can't remember the answers.

Yeah, I have no idea why our pedi does it.
