Possible Milk Allergy- Questions

We've been on Soy formula since about 4 months old because the doctor thought LO might have a milk allergy due to a skin rash. He still has patchy dry skin around knees and elbows which has been dubbed eczema.

About a month ago we let LO try some plain yogurt. He didn't seem to have a problem.

Three days ago we started whole cow's milk. Now LO looks like he has the chicken pox-- he has a rash on his cheeks and chest and it looks like little pimples. Does this sound like a possible milk allergy to you experienced mamas?

So my question: can he have a milk allergy but not react to the yogurt? Granted, he's only had a small amount at a time, and not even 2 days in a row--but he should still react, right?

TIA!

Re: Possible Milk Allergy- Questions

  • I am a newbie to the boards, and have been reading some of the allergy boards posts . I look forward to hearing the thoughts on your questions. My son is 2 and has always had a bit of dry skin (eczema), however as he turned one it got worse, and now at 2 it's terrible all over his arms and legs (not is chest or face, which makes me think it might be something in the grass)..  He has a lot of what you described. I have tried every cream/lotion/bath soak you could try and it doesn't seem to get better, and if it does, it quickly goes back to bad.   He loves milk, so I really hope it's not a milk allergy- but then thought maybe it's a wheat allergy..  I have allergy testing scheduled for him in a bout a month.    I know he has a sensitivity to peanuts/peanut butter due to the hives he gets right after being exposed.

  • I would ask your doctor, but I think I've read somewhere that the milk proteins are slightly different in "baked" things or in yogurt, cheese, etc than those found in straight milk.  It may be that your LO still has a dairy intolerance/allergy.  I would ask the doctor about maybe waiting to trial dairy again and just keep using soy in the meantime.  I'm assuming your LO doesn't have trouble with soy?
My LO is turing one this week and we are going to start a dairy trial :)!

  • It does sound like a milk allergy to me. Has he had any vomiting or any blood in his stools by any chance? If all he had was a milk allergy, he shouldn't have the hives or rashes you've described so I'm wondering if you should try Nutramigen or Alimentum, hypoallergenic formulas that are the next step after trying the soy ones. I have heard that someone who can have yogurt at first can't have actual milk so that may be why your LO did okay with yogurt but not with straight milk. Have you scheduled an appointment with an allergist by any chance?

  • Check in with an allergist.  It could very well be a milk issue.  My LO just gets very rashy around his face and knees when he has milk proteins and itchy.  He scored off the charts when he had a blood test for it.  Allergies can appear different for everyone.

  • Lovely :(  Do milk allergies go away or might he have this forever?

I haven't seen an allergist-- I feel like if I call my pedi she's going to tell me to lay off milk and 'see what happens'-- should I go over her head?

We tried nutrimigen (sp) when his rashes started per the pedi's advice, but LO wasn't a fan, it didn't seem to do much, and soy was cheaper, so we tried that. The soy seems fine, he's been on it for about 6 months now-- although I suppose his "eczema" could be a soy allergy??

He hasn't had any throwing up or spit up, even (although now that I think about it, I think there was a little after the yogurt). His poop has been normal--lovely green and orange colors thanks to his veggies.
