Food Allergy

LC vs. Pediatrician = one confused momma

My doctor and LC have conflicting opinions on LO's potential milk allergy. Doctor said he's fine, LC said he is classic case for a milk allergy. Who do I listen to?  I cut out dairy from my diet for the past week and LO's rash has drastically improved, no more green poop, and he's spitting up a less. However I tried giving him neutramigen formula to see if it would help him feel better but he hated it and didn't sleep the entire night after we gave it to him. I also keep reading that children with milk allergies also have soy allergies and I am already on a vegan diet so cutting out soy will leave me very little to eat. I am confused and have no idea who to listen to, any input would be appreciated.

  • I'd listen to the LC. Pedi's get very little (if any) education on breastfeeding and many (mine included) are of the mindset that what mom eats doesn't come through the milk to the baby.  I stumped mine when I asked him why alcohol and caffiene does but he thinks food proteins wouldn't :)

why are you questioning it then?

i eat fish but no other meat and was dairy, soy and egg free.  it's totally doable.

but if your baby was better when you cut out dairy then why are you  worried about soy?  and if you're vegan then why was dairy an issue to begin with?

  • I was a vegetarian, I am now on a vegan diet after learning of the potential allergy. I was confused if the rash cleared up on its own as the ped. said it would or because I made the dietary changes. Of course I take a look tonight and the rash has spread to his chest, but still clearing on the face. So he is not 100% better, which is why I am wondering if I should cut out soy as well. Sorry for the poorly worded post.

  • Well, my opinion and experience has been that my LC was right, and green poops are usually an indication of either hindmilk/foremilk imbalance or a milk allergy.  And since your LO is also exhibiting some pretty standard MSPI symptoms (like the rash) in addition to GI problems I would think it's pretty safe to assume your LO is having trouble with the dairy in your diet.

As far as soy, you could try eliminating it as well until your LO's symptoms improve/go away and then trial it back into your diet.  I started with just eliminating dairy, but after a week I decided to eliminate soy as well just to be sure.  It turns out that my LO does have problems with soy (and eggs and tomatoes as well).  I have been BFing him on an elimination diet now since he was 7 wks old and he's turning one this week.  It was definitely tough at first, especially like you said if you eliminate dairy usually the fall back is soy, but once you get used to it, it's not that bad.

Also, Nutramigen still contains milk proteins, just partially broken down, so if you LO is very sensitive (like my guy) he may still react that the formula.  In the cases where a baby cannot tolerate a hydrolysate formula like Nutramigen they end up needing an elemental formula, which are made up of amino-acids and contain no milk proteins.  Just food for thought :)

    Good luck!
