Parenting after 35

FFMC-aka I'm being judgy

Need to vent...

Went to my aunt's house yest to see my cousin and his wife who are visiting for a few weeks.  They have an almost 1 year old, so we had a party for the little guy (who's bigger than C)

During the party, they announced they're pregnant again and due in 6 months.

Here's the judgy part.

My cousin only has a part time job.  She doesn't work.  They live with her parents.  And they're 30.  She's going back to school this fall to be a minister.  He is a teacher.

I like them both.. they're good people.  But they have this elitist air about them that  "we're better than you" because we care about the Earth and are doing things to save the planet.  We don't eat meat, we recycle and compost.  We reduce our carbon footprint.  I will breastfeed my kid until he's 7.  Yay us!

Sorry to be so judgy.  They just rub me the wrong way with all the showing off of their "awesomeness."  Plus, I'm hugely jealous of their fertility!  :)

FWIW, I gave them a baby toy made of plastics that was made in China.  I'm sure she cringed.  But who gives a baby a soft wooden teething ring???!

Vent over.

  • Well, they may be all earthy and green, but it seems they lack maturity and responsibility.  Have more kids, don't work, and live off of your parents as adults.   Not too much to brag about there, IMHO.

  • If they really cared about the Earth they wouldn't have any children.  That would truly help decrease their carbon footprint. Remind them of that the next time they get all elitist.

Amy... that's exactly what my super non-judgy husband said!!  And he's way more tolerant of their elitist attitudes than I am!

One more note.. she gave her kid a chocolate cupcake for his birthday.  He destroyed it in seconds.   When I told her I wouldn't give one to C because we haven't given him chocolate yet, she seemed offended.   And later, when I gave him a couple of animal crackers, her comment was, "Gee, I guess he likes his refined sugars."  Um.. what do you think was in the cupcake?  Tofu???  (It was from a box mix!)

  • If you can't support yourself and you continue to spawn offspring, you have no right to be high and mighty.  It is very easy to be crunchy when you are not paying any of the major bills.

Breastfeeding until her kid is 7?  I want to see that.  While I miss BF with Michael, he has TEETH now and likes to give me love nips.  Of which I would not want to get on my nips.

  • Ick. I'm pretty crunchy, but don't feel remotely superior or judgy towards non-crunchies.

BTW, I got M several wooden teething toys as well as a SophieEmbarrassed

  •  Van... I suspect she's planning to go to 7 years if she can.  A few weeks ago her SIL (my other cousin) and I were laughing about an aunt who BF her boys until they were old enough to help themselves.  (It's a way-too-vivid memory for me)   I'm talking close to 4 or 5.   We both thought it was super creepy.

She got a bit short with us both and started spewing some nonsense about a baby's brain doesn't fully develop until 7 or 8.   I pointed out that at 7 or 8, they're no longer considered babies!  That didn't go over so well.

It is kind of fun to poke the bear.

Isn't wood a little too soft?  I'd think they'd splinter.   (Didn't ask the cousin about that... figured I'd look like the unenlightened peasant that I am.)

I hate hypocritical people even more than I dislike judgy people.  My late response to your cousin is, "Well we can't all feed our children cupcakes."

    Boy do I dislike her!

    I think they're treated with stuff - all organic, non-toxic stuff I'm sure :P

I think you have a right to be judgemental.  Several people I know who were breastfeeding thier children had to wean early when they found out they were pregnant. This was a doctor rec.  So you're saying that she's pregnant, and is still BF her almost one year? How good is that for her unborn child?   Jeez, now I am getting judgemental...

From what I've read, you can BF while pregnant without detriment to either child.  Of course, you will probably be eating everything that isn't nailed down, but it can be safely done.

That said, I will happily join on the judging bandwagon, especially re: cupcake vs animal crackers and the refined sugar comment and still living with your parents at the age of 30!  Also, what kind of car do they drive?  Do they do simple things like recycle, compost, and garden?

    DD1 is 3, DD2 is 1.
  • I would also like to jump on the judging wagon. Those people's fullness of themselves is not justified at all!

  • I'm totally with you on this. Those kind of people annoy the heck out of me. I wonder if their granola friends are going to bail them out when they find themselves with 2 kids and a low income. I guess they can go and look for empty cans for extra pennies!! I'm so bad, lol.

  • And that BF-ing until 7 business is just plain WRONG. Until 2, that's still pushing it but OK. I figure as soon as teeth start coming out, it's time to start weaning. Adrian's bites are pretty painful, I wouldn't want those teeth on my nips!!
