DD used to go to bed anywhere between 9-10:30, with 9:30 being about average. Lately she's been getting sleepy earlier and going to bed on average between 8:30-8:45. Unfortunately, that also means she's wanting to get up earlier- she used to be good til around 9-9:30am, and now it's 7:30-8. We are night owls and the old schedule worked better for us (but of course it's not about us anymore.) That being said, is it normal for kids to start to put themselves onto their own schedules around 1 year, and is there any value in trying to see if we can encourage her to go back to her old schedule? It's especially lousy on Saturdays as DH works til 7:30 so we weren't able to have a family dinner this week. I know eventually we'll have to be up even earlier once we get to school-age, and for activities we are up earlier 1-2x per week, but if that could go back to being the exception and not the rule for now I would be delighted.
Re: Chages in bed and wakeup times?
This is totally us. K just bumped her own bedtime at about 12 months. She used to stay up until 10pm and it was perfect for us. But now she likes 8:30 - 9, and wakes up at 8am instead of 9am. Ugh, I needed that hour of sleep.
We've tried different things, but this seems to be what she needs, so we're going with it. I feel your pain!
Both my kids (depending on the age) always went to bed at 7:30 or 8:30 at night. And wake up (and still do) at about 6:30.
They both naturally do this - I know some people are night owls (we aren't, but we aren't morning people either)
But I think kids natually find their own rhythum, night owl or not.
PS - I also preferred our kids at the 8 pm to 6 am schedule because we work and I have to get them out of bed, dressed, fed and to school before I ever get into work. Sleeping in is not an option.
