Anyone's toddler Lactose Intolerrant???

My youngest (3 yrs) recently had a horrible case of diarrhea for just over 2 weeks.  We took him to the pedi after the first week who recommended we cut out all dairy as she stated having prolonged diarrhea can cause lactose intollerance.  After about a week it finally ended.  He had gone about 4 days without diarrhea so I thought I would try to reintroduce dairy since I'm thinking this "bug" is gone (FYI: the doctor ordered a stool sample with various  parasite tests and all came back negative).  Within 2 hours of drinking half a cup of milk he had diarrhea and continued to have it two additional times.  I haven't given him any more milk.

My husband and I are both lactose intollerant so we know the drill for adults.  But I'm not as familiar for a child so young.  We can take lactaid pills but I've never seen anything for children.  Obviously lactose free milk or soy milk is an option.  He's a very picky eater so I'm concerned about nutrition and vitamins.

Any advice/help would be greatly apprecaited.

Re: Anyone's toddler Lactose Intolerrant???

  • My son is allergic to dairy.  We found out right after he turned one.  He did have loose stools, but the major symptoms he had was bad tummy aches (gas), a constant runny nose, and just general irratability (hello...he had a tummy ache all the time, so why wouldn't he be crabby?).  At first, we did not suspect a dairy allergy, but once we did, we cut out all dairy and have never gone back.  He drinks almond milk.  As for other foods, there is dairy in a lot of things you'd not suspect, so that can be hard when we want to eat out or if we are at someone else's house, but at home, it isn't a big deal.  He is plenty healthy and he eats mostly meats and fruits and veggies.
