High-Risk Pregnancy

New here...what a week this has been!

Hi there!  I have been a previous lurker of the bump boards, but never really posted because I felt like everyone else asked my questions more eloquently:)  However, my current situation led me to find the high risk board and I hope to find some support here:)  Long story short (somewhat), I woke up early Sunday morning with really bad bleeding- after our initial shock, my husband quickly drove me to the emergency room and I was admitted to labor and delivery.  Additionally, it was determined that I was contracting and dilated 1 cm- the nurses were great and quickly set up my IV's, started me on Magnesium Sulfate to hopefully stop the contractions, gave me a steroid shot to speed up the baby's lung development, and catheterized me (ouch)!  After being on the mag for more than 24 hours, the contractions and bleeding slowed and they were able to wean me off of it.  In following up with the bleeding, they did a few ultrasounds and in doing so, they found a completely unrelated issue- they think that our baby has chronic diaphragmatic hernia (basically, the hernia has a hole in which the organs in the stomach cavity move up into the chest cavity and compromise the growth of the baby's lungs).  My husband and I were terrified when we heard this- it was a lot of information to process and we felt like every time we got news about what was potentially going on, the news kept getting worse and worse.  So- as of now, I am on bedrest at the hospital until our doctor can set us up with appts. at the Childrens Hospital of Pennsylvania (CHOP).  Once the appts. are made, we will go to my parents' house outside of Philly where I will stay on restricted bedrest for as long as possible...they said the best thing is to make sure we try to keep the baby inside for as long as possible.

Ahhh...what a week this has been- thanks for letting me share my story and I look forward to being a part of this board:)

  • I'm sorry you're going through this but CHOP is amazing.  They're tied for #1 Children's Hospital in the US so at least you and your baby are in good hands.  I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.  Here's hoping you and the little one are fine and he/she can keep baking.  How far along are you?

  • Thanks for the thoughts and prayers...we are 30 weeks along.  Just trying to keep the baby inside for as long as possible!  We are set-up with an appt. at CHOP on Thursday, so hopefully we will have more information and a plan at that point.  I've heard nothing but great things about CHOP, so although this experience has been terrifying, I feel like we are in the best hands possible.  Thanks again:)
  • Hello,  I don't post much, but I did read your post yesterday.  Have been thinking of you all day.  Good Luck and Prayers sent.
