What's your favorite beach town in Maine?

I asked a week or so ago about northeastern beaches, and DH and I are leaning towards Maine. I am leaning towards Ogunquit, DH loves Old Orchard. What beach town do you love and why?

  • DH is from Maine.  His answer to your question is York.  His reasons - two beaches, little shops, the Nubble lighthouse, ice cream and Goldenrod taffy. :)

  • We were just at Portland Headlight in Cape Elizabeth today.  It's a small rocky beach, but you can't beat the views.  I've heard good things about Cresent Beach which I believe is also in Cape Elizabeth.  Old Orchard is a popular area.  We love the pizza and pier fries (with vinegar!).  We were in York last weekend at York's Animal Kingdom.  I've heard good things about that beach, but we didn't end up making it there.  Boothbay Harbor is a cute little town, my DS was mesmerized watching the salt water taffy getting made.  Then there is Bar Harbor.  Lots of great places, it just depends on what you are looking for.  You should ask on the Maine board of the nest.  There are people from Wells and Kennebunk that can offer some other ideas.

ETA: are you only looking for ocean beaches?  If not, Sebago is a great lake.  We used to go camping in Moosehead.

  • IMO York and Ogunquit are a lot nicer than OOB.....although OOB is fun for kids and the beach is long and flat.

Also, Kennebunk/Kennebunkport is great- nice shops, good restaurants. People love Goose Rocks beach which is a small little section of K'bunkport--it's quiet.

I love the Portland area--not a lot of long beaches but such a fun small city. And Cape Elizabeth is nice--Fort Williams park is really scenic-lighthouse,etc...

  • we love wells for the beach...and ogunquit is fabulous too....i have heard great things about york beach and we are planning to venture there next year...

  • Wells is very family friendly. I find OOB to be sort of cheap and dirty. Or head up north to Booth Bay, or Freeport (shopping!)/Brunswick/Poppom Beach.

  • We took DD to Short Sands beach in York last month.  It's very family friendly and was great for her!  We used to vacation on Ogunquit every year which is great as well!!
  • Thank you all for sharing your opinions! And for anyone still reading or who has already answered, if you could choose between York, Wells & Ogunquit, which would you choose? We are looking for afordable, family friendly town (plenty to do) and a nice beach for kids.

    Thanks!

  • I've never really been to Wells and Ogunquit, so I would say York because you could go to the zoo/amusement park area for the day.  You are also really close to Kittery to go shopping.  It's an easy drive to Portland/Cape Elizabeth beaches.
