I definitely recommend getting one that uses batteries. I hate our wind up ones. We end up winding them up every two minutes over and over again. It sucks. They cry every time it shuts off so I definitely doesn't help them sleep.
My IVF twins born at 33w6days by c-section due to twin A being IUGR
Rylan born at 2:54pm weighing 2lb 8oz, 14.5 inches
Emma born at 2:55pm weighing 5lb 5oz, 18 inches
I'd recommend a white noise machine instead of a mobile to put LO to sleep. Some books say that the mobile, especially once they can see it clearly, will actually stimulate them to be awake, even if the music is soothing. A white noise machine runs on batteries and isn't melodic at all, much better to put them to sleep. I got the sleep sheep from BRU and it's fantastic.

If they like mobiles, I don't think it matters. DD enjoys looking up at the fan. If you're looking for some sort of long-lasting distraction- get a battery operated soother with lights and music. DD love her fp seahorse and she an aquarium for her crib.
We have a windup one. I agree with PP, winding it up every couple minutes sucks. But the fact that it is a Brutus the Buckeye mobile cancels out any negative, Lol. Go Bucks!!

We have the precious planet mobile. It comes with a remote that you can start or stop it with so you dont disturb baby. It also projects on the canopy on the mobile and once LO is older you can remove the canopy and it will project on the ceiling. It plays music, has nature sounds, and heartbeat sound.

We have this one https://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Rainforest-Leaves-Musical-Mobile/dp/B000JIHP88/ref=sr_1_2?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1312211393&sr=1-2 and DD loves it! I'd say it does stimulate her quite a bit though. If she is pretty sleepy it'd probably put her to sleep. But we pretty much don't use it to actually put her to sleep right now.
We also have https://www.amazon.com/Baby-Einstein-30984-Neptune-Soother/dp/B0018Z35DA/ref=sr_1_11?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1312211624&sr=1-11 which works to put her to sleep sometimes, however because she has to turn to see it she always loses her paci easier which results in her waking up more. So we're sticking with the mobile for now & the aquarium soother for when she is older. But both are great.
