A note on baby carriers/slings

As we're all shopping for goodies for our new little ones I wanted to point out a couple things for those looking into babywearing:

~ Slings where the baby is in a lying down position can be unsafe and even deadly. This article has the information you need to keep baby safe.

~ There are a lot of great options for babywearing out there, but the more mainstream carriers (Bjorn, Snuglii) are quite possibly the least comfortable, and useful for the shortest amount of time. Check into options like the Moby for the first 6-12 months, the Ergo thereafter. I can still comfortably wear my 4.5 year old in an Ergo (very handy for Disney trips, sick days, etc.).

~ Check out TheBabyWearer.com for lots of good information and reviews before you commit to one.

I've taught BWing for years and would be happy to help if anyone needs assistance, but just wanted to throw that info out there. :)

Re: A note on baby carriers/slings

  • I couldn't agree more with the Bjorn etc :)  We have lots of moms come in complaining about the Infantino/Bjorn carriers :) who notice a 1000% difference with anything from a Moby to an Ergo.

In our case, our kids hate Mobys so we will be doing the Ergo as soon as he can be in it with the newborn insert.

  • Thanks for this! I have 2 questions, is there an age at which slings are safe? Also, I'm purchasing the Becco Gemini, is there a time period to wait before putting the baby in this or can you start right away? Thanks!

Yes! When I get the "your back must be killing you!" comments I know it's from people who used a Bjorn type.

As far as I know the Beco can be used right away. You'll probably want to keep baby's legs tucked up inside the carrier froggy leg style (looking something like this) for the first month or two. Just make sure baby is upright (also helps with reflux!) and high enough on your body for you to kiss the top of baby's head. :)

  • Just curious--where do you teach babywearing?  Mom groups, hospitals, etc or where?

Our store does babywearing once a month and I was just wondering where else people are interested in it.

We actually have a local BWing group; lots of new moms come every month to check things out. I haven't been in forever (thanks, morning sickness) but it's awesome!

  • We love the Moby at our house!  I had a Maya wrap and sold it to get the Moby because I hated it!  Not comfy at all.  I hated my Snugli even more!  I want a good back carrier for when the baby is a little older or for DH to use with DD2 when we are out.  I don't know how much I can get him to spend, but I'd love to get some ideas on what is good for back carrying a 21lb toddler.

I love our Ergo and equally love my friend's Beco :)  Well worth the money.  You can often find Ergo on babysteals.com and similar places.

I would DEFINITELY get the Ergo. It will last you years and years, seriously. The organic ones are so soft and comfy right out of the box -- they're my favorite. I've had mine since my little boy was six months old and he's still in it at 33 pounds and 4.5 years.

  • I have a few questions! First, does the moby feel secure when the baby is in it? I practiced wrapping it a few times, and it just didn't feel like I'd be OK with a newborn being in there.

Also, I have heard mixed reviews, so is the Ergo infant insert worth it or no?

We have the performance since I got soooo hot with the kids that close to me.  I love it.  My 2 year old is 20lbs and it is AWESOME with her.  My other girls are 34lbs and less and either of them could technically fit :)

Yes! The Moby is very, very secure. I just talked to my friend who did all her household chores this morning (vacuuming, mopping, dishes, etc.) with her newborn sleeping in hers for three hours. It does take a little practice to learn it, but once you get it you can wrap it in under 30 seconds. Just wrap it nice and snug -- remember the stretch is enough to get baby in there and secure, so don't feel like you have to leave a lot of slack to fit the baby in.

Re: the Ergo insert I haven't tried it myself, but I can tell you that it's going to be pretty hot. I don't plan on busting out the Ergo for baby 2 until she's six months or so; we'll be doing the Moby till then.

I like the Ergo insert Embarrassed.  If we can't get the baby to like the Moby (Mara hated it), we will be using the Ergo with the insert.

  • Thank you for this info Erin! A friend just gave me her Moby, Ergo, Maya, and Bjorn (they were well loved but I am stoked!) I figure when/if I fall in love with one I'll purchase my own so I have it for future babes. I'm most exited about the article about safety though! I am excited about bwing but was quieted about the safety if starting too soon.

Thank you for your input ladies! I am definitely buying the Ergo, and will see about the insert depending on how much money we have in these coming few months. It's nice to know it's not a must have.

  • How do you like the Boba G2?

Also, I found this website pretty helpful to make my decisions:

I bought the Moby wrap and am thinking about the ergo sport for when baby is bigger/older, but also heard good things about the Boba.

  • Thanks for the info! I am planning on baby wearing and have been doing some research myself.  I am planning on getting a Moby & an Ergo as well.

I do have one question, which sounds stupid but I just can't wrap my mind around it.  With all of us having December babies, how does this work in the winter? I don't want to have to lug around my car seat all the time and then put them in my Moby once I get indoors, but I worry about the baby not being kept warm enough otherwise.  Also, I'd be wearing a coat so how does that work?

I apologize if these questions are stupid, but I'm not sure the proper way to do this in the winter and don't want to wait until spring/summer to get started.

Not a stupid question at all! :)

This is actually one of my favorite things about the Moby: in winter I get dressed, wrap on the Moby, then put on my coat. When we get to where we're going I quickly pop baby out of the carseat and into the Moby and wrap my coat around both of us till we get inside. Easy!

  • The ERGO website says you can carry newborns if you get the H2H insert. Is this a lie?

And by that I mean do most people not recommend it?

Well thanks for the response. Seems super easy! I guess I just worried if they were under my coat they wouldn't get enough air.  Glad to know that's not the case!

Well you CAN, yes. Honestly my hangup with it is that it's kind of hot -- ha! I don't personally know anyone who is in love with the insert, but that doesn't mean there aren't people who do love it. I think it's just more cumbersome than the Moby, FWIW.

  • Does anyone have a recommendation for a newborn? We are planning on getting an ergo (performance since we're in AZ and it's dang hot out!) but I haven't heard great things about the newborn insert. I was considering a maya wrap, but after reading this article, I can see why it may not be the best option.

The Moby is always, always my recommendation for newborns. Since you're in AZ you could get one of the SPF treated ones too. Just practice a few times and you'll be able to wrap it in 30 seconds flat!

I have a Boba G2 and I really love it. DH and I are tall, and our LO is pretty big too, and the Boba just fit our bodies really well. We will use our moby with #2 and eventually the Boba with him/her as well.
