DS Cough

DS has had croup since Friday and was given a steroid shot and it broke it all up but now the poor guy cannot stop coughing. I am desperate for something to help him get a good nights sleep. We have been getting him the hylands cough syrup and it is just not doing anything. I am really to give any thing a try at this point he is just so uncomfortable. He is 34lbs

Does anyone have any suggestions or tips?

TIA

Re: DS Cough

  • Whenever DS has a bad cough, I give him a tsp of honey (in a medicine syringe).  It helps tremendously.  I usually have to repeat the dose every few hours on the bad nights, but there are no side effects to worry about, and it works within minutes.  My pediatrician recommended it.

Also, propping his head on a pillow, humidifier, Vicks baby rub/bath, and saline nasal drops (when he lets us put them in).

DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.

  • Ditto PP, when my DS was about 9 months maybe 10 months (can't recall) he had gotten croup and he had to get 2 or three steroid shots (one was oral). Every few days the symptoms would get worse when the shot would wear off. If it gets so bad he won't lay down or sleep/hard to breathe, take him to the ER.

My pedi said it gets very dangerous and in the ER they have a special breathing treatment they do that they can't do in the pedi office. It helped my DS a lot ! I decided to take him to the ER because he wasn't breathing right, and he was gasping for air and would not lay still/couldn't sleep.

Do not hesitate to keep taking him into the pedi because I took my DS 3 times in one week and once to the ER =( The last time, since he had croup for so long he ended up with a double ear infection and had to be on antibiotics. =( Stay strong! I didn't get any sleep for 4 days and wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. ((HUGS))!
