Names (GTKY)

I am really bored and too tired to do anything on a Sunday night (just got home from a kid's b-day party).  So even though this isn't the Baby Names board:

What names do you really dislike?  As in, "what are they thinking sticking their kid with THAT name".

Why do you dislike the name(s)?

What are your favorite names for a boy/girl?

Personally, I don't like names that begin with Mc...  I think they are last names.  I love the names Jocelyn (g) and Devon (b) (although DH hates both ;o)

Hello, I'm also bored.  I'm back and forth between bumping and watching Taken on TV.  Anyway,  I don't have any names specifically that I don't like but being a teacher any name of a student that was a PIA I couldn't use as a name for my child.  I like the names Nolan and Patrick for boys.  For girls I like Olivia and Evelyn.

  • I don't enjoy names with 4 or more syllables.  I don't like plain names (Jane, Sarah, Megan, Greg, Michael, Thomas, etc).  I don't like pretty much any name on the "top 10" list, but also don't like names that people wouldn't know how to say or spell.

  • I don't like names that are overused.  I know sometimes names are used, and THEN they become popular...but when a name has been very popular for a while and parents still use it, it just bugs me.

My favorite girl names are Emily (love love) and Chloe, the names we've chosen for our future LO's are Joseph if a boy and Kayla for a girl.

    Lilypie - (fm2j)

    Lilypie - (YesX)

  • My DH and I disagree on almost every name.  Every name he comes up with I can associate with a kid that I work with at school and I just can't make myself do it!  It took us forever to agree on a name for our DD (Chloe).

Girl names I love-Ella, Nora, Stella, Brynn, Claire, Adelyn, Clara

Boy names I love-Connor, Landon, Lane, Reid

I had a kid in my sunday school named Rowdy....seriously, his God-given name!!  Fit him pretty well too!!

  • There aren't too many names that I dislike. I'm not a fan of "unique" spelling for names. Especially if it is completely out there.

Not sure what we will name our next but some names I like are: Savannah, Katherine, Maggie, James, Logan, and Owen.

  • I will second whomever said normal names with "cre8iv" spellings, especially those with superflous Ys. Ks in place of what should be a C is also a peeve of mine. It makes you sound like a Kardashian.

I like normal sounding names that aren't super common. I perhaps lean a little toward the old-fashioned side. If you'd expect to hear it on a grandparent, I probably like it. :)

My favorite names (of the moment; they're always changing!) are Mila, Clara, Colette or Jillian for a girl; Cole, Judah, Silas, Elliott, Paul or Patrick for a boy.

    Just keep swimming.
  • I'm super judgy when I hear baby names.. probably because I have a normal name with a unique spelling so I know the pain that these kids will go through!

    Names I hate and why:

I hate all seemingly normal names ruined by Y's, Z's, I's, L's or any other letter that does not belong. I HATE when parents randomly change the spelling of a name to make it more unique.. uuughhhh! I've also come to hate most girl names that begin with the letter M... Madison, Michaela, Michelle, Morgan... not sure why, they just bug me.

    Favorite names:

Boy- Nathan Benjamin, Samuel Benjamin, Ari Benjamin or Eli Benjamin.

Girl- Riva Ellen, Rebecca Ellen, or Liliana Ellen

Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • What names do you really dislike?  As in, "what are they thinking sticking their kid with THAT name".  Crap like "Treasure" and "Bambi." While DH and I have liked the name Aiden for a long time, we wouldn't use it or any of the Br-, C-, Z- -ayden variants because of popularity. I also hate Charlotte and Scarlet and can't for the life of me figure out what people like about them. I also hate the cutesy names: Kaylee, Brynlee, Hailey, etc.

Why do you dislike the name(s)?  Aiden (and variants): too popular, Scarlet/Charlotte - "scar" and "harlot." Cutesy names: they don't grow well. I can't imagine having to report to a boss named Kylie.

What are your favorite names for a boy/girl? We like Morgan Ainsley for a girl and Calvin Granger for a boy. I/we/he also like Allison, Meredith, Ivy, Jenna, Kara, Willa, Maren, and Noelle for girls. Other boy picks are Owen, Graham, Ian, Jacoby, Seth, and Jameson.

Nope. no urban legend. I have seen the birth certificates of the twins and met the student named Shithead.

I know it is hard to believe but I wouldn't in my wildest dreams make it up.

  • As many other people have said, I don't like when you take a common name and change the spelling just to make it unique. As an admissions rep, I have come across some seriously crazy spellings, and then they get mad when I mispronounce it! One time I called a girl (for the life of me I can't remember the exact name) and she had a silent 'm' in the front of her name...as I was informed after I had pronounced the 'm' (as would any normal person) and was greeted with (in a nasty tone) "the 'm' is silent!" ...because I would know this. Anyways...

Names we will be using (some are popular, yes, but we like them so sue us): Olivia Joan, Lily Grace, Addison Faith, Landon Maurice, and Aiden Xavier.

I dislike the super cutesy, crazy popular names... Jayden, Grayson etc.  I guess dislike isn't the word so much as I wouldn't pick a name like that.  I also wish that people would choose traditional spellings for traditional names.  Changing the spelling doesn't make it original, it creates issues for your kid.

My favorite names for a boy are Dimitri and Silas and for a girl Emilia and Gloria.

  • Most of the names I dislike come from students I've had difficulties with. Gregory, Jose, Eric all make me shudder. Mia makes me want to cry in a corner LOL. Although they don't bother me if it's someone else's child...just not one I'd choose for my own. Right now I love Colton for a boy (had a fabulous student named Colton!) and Paige for a girl. Obviously I love Adelynn too.

  • Oh, and in terms of crazy names...my mom owns an optical company. She had a customer back in the 90s named Marijuana Pepsi...she showed us her drivers license because we didn't believe her. I think she said the lady changed her name to that in her 20s. At least her parents didn't do that to her!

WTH is wrong with people that they give their children these awful names!

    Anyway.. topic at hand -

I don't exactly dislike names, it's just there are names I would not choose to name my child. I wouldn't pick a name that is really common and boring (such as Bob, Bill, John, Mary, etc...) or one that sounds like it should be a last name (Smith, anything with Mc, etc...).

Girl names we like - Vivienne, Amelia and Adalie.
Boy names we like - Micah, Josiah and Elliott.

  • What names do you really dislike?  As in, "what are they thinking sticking their kid with THAT name".   My sister has a close friend that named her child Patience. I don't like trendy names or names that are totally off the wall.

Why do you dislike the name(s)?  Patience is just terrible, enough said. I don't like when someone yells a name and 12 people turn and look.

What are your favorite names for a boy/girl? I love the name Guy for a boy, but DH is dead set against it for a first name, so we like Matthew. For a girl I love Rosalyn.

    Now that is original...wow!

  • At the risk of angering all the school teachers out there, I'll have to say that I love unique names (mainly the ones with meaning behind them).

    My mother's name is Zoraida

    My sister's name was Ivelisse

    MH's name is John

because of that, my first two picks for girl names are Zoralisse and Johnaida.  Don't fret teachers.  Chances are that my children will be home-schooled. We are first generation Americans so the names may seem too "unique" for some people, but it's not something that other foreign children haven't had to deal with. Plus, I would like my child to know where their name came from and why those people are so special to us.

I agree with you on this point about names. We are choosing to have my maiden name as a middle name for one of our children, and my MIL's maiden name for another middle name. My maiden name is Vail and my MIL's is Serhijiw (pronounced ser-hee-ith... it is Polish). We were going to go with MIL's maiden name anyway because it is my husband's middle name. Obviously, it will go with a son...it's way too masculine sounding for a girl's middle name. Vail is a little more gender neutral so I can see it going with a boy or a girl.
