PT and going to people's houses

DS is doing really well with PT at home and when we go out and about around town.  He is still having some difficulty with pooping on the potty, but doesn't have any pee accidents at home anymore.  But, when we go to, say, my parents' house for the day, he has tons of accidents.  I know he's more distracted because his cousins are usually there and they have lots of toys, but I'm just wondering how long it took for your LO to "generalize" the skills of potty training to other situations other than just home.

  • She picked it up really quickly, but at first I was REALLY vigilant about giving her reminders when we were at someone else's house. Now we're getting to the point where I really trust her to tell me when she has to go, every time.

  • DD seemed to pick it up rather quickly bc she spends a lot of time at my parents house. She also goes to daycare so she is used to going in different places.

I also usually make sure we go before we go somewhere so I know she doesn't have a full bladder or anything. I tend to ask her a bit more if she has to go when we're at a friend's house.

  • DS will go at places like my mom's house, but he still won't go on public toilets (he's willing to try, but he prefers to hold it until we go home).  We've been to playdates, the park, and even a bounce house without accidents.  Usually about three hours is as long as we let him go without using the potty.

Although he's great with me, I'm a little nervous about how he will do once he starts preschool next month.

  • DS does really well when we're out whether it's a public bathroom like the library or at a family member or friend's home. It's a lot easier for him to be comfortable because he stands up. Girls would be more picky for this reason. Do you parents have a potty ring or potty? Perhaps bringing yours from home would help her.

  • My DS was surprised there were potties at places other than home, so we make sure to take him to the bathroom as soon as we arrive at our destination whether it be another home or public place. This has helped him.

This. It was more the being distracted by other people/kids than actually being at someone else's house. She had some accidents during play dates here at home, too. Like sunnyday, I became super vigilant about it and now it's not a problem at all.
