I was GBS + with my last 2 pg (my last one was a succesful drug free VBAC). anyway I am REALLY REALLY hoping to avoid being + this time around and have heard a lot of success stories with taking probiotics before being tested....
I went to my health food store but was TOTALLY overhwlemed with all the choices and most of them were $30-50 dollars (EEEKS)
So 2 questions:
1) What probiotics did you/do you/are you taking
2) when did you start them? Should I start taking them now (23 weeks) or wait until closer to 35/36 weeks when my midwives do the GBS test??
Thanks so much I REALLY appreciate the input/advice/experiences
ps. any positive success stories of taking them and being gbs - ??
Re: GBS + and probiotics question (xp from natural birth board)
GBS is Group B Strep, it's a bacteria that 30% of women just have. Nothing to do with cleanliness or anything, it just happens. If you are GBS positive around birth they recommend IV antibiotics every 4 hours so you lessen the chance of transfing the bacteria to baby ( a small percentage get very sick as a result of GBS).
OP, I don't see why it wouldn't hurt to start probiotics now. My mw even suggested eating lots of plain yogurt and/or kefir (just make sure it doesn't have a lot of sugar). You can take the supplements, but talk to your mw first. Mine also told me that yogurt can be used vaginally, but you'd have to talk o yours about how exactly that works.
