Help with Name Spelling/Pronunciation

We're pretty well set on the name Kayla, but are less certain on the spelling. We were originally planning on spelling "Caila" but quickly discovered it would be forever mispronounced.

Question is - is "Kaila" any more self-explanatory to pronounce? Would you pronounce it as "Kayla"?

For some reason I find the spelling to be much prettier with an "i" than a "y", but don't want our daughter to be stuck with having her name mispronounced her whole life!

Re: Help with Name Spelling/Pronunciation

  • I would pronounce Kaila as kye-la.  I would use the Kayla spelling.

  • I know a "Kayla" whose name is spelled Kaila.  However, you'd probably hear the pronunciation "KYE-luh" a lot.

  • Kayla. No question how it's spelled. I like the way it looks, too. The "i" and "l" run together in Kaila for me.

  • I know a Kala...if you like that spelling better.  I don't think she ever had trouble with people mispronouncing her name.

  • I think spelling it with an "i" would lead to a lot of mispronunciation. What about Kala or Kaela? Just a thought...they are unique spellings, but if you don't want the traditional "Kayla" spelling those two probably won't be mispronounced as much.

  • Kaila is definitely KYE-la in my book. And in this case, I 100% think Kayla is prettier (I usually don't like Y's in the middle of names).

  • If you don't want her to have pronunciation problems, I'd spell it Kayla.
  • I think Caila and Kaila look like Kai (rhymes with eye) la, not Kayla. I vote Kayla. It's straightforward and your daughter will be able to buy those silly little knick knacks with her name on them
  • Why make it more difficult than it needs to be?  Spell it Kayla and be done with it.

I agree.  Kaila is pronounced Ky-luh.  Kayla is fine the way it is.

  • Thanks to all for your feedback! I'm going with Kayla... now I just have to sell my husband on it! I think trying to decide on a name has been the biggest challenge of being pregnant to date!
