Colorado and Rocky Mt Nat Park 15 wks pregnant

Copy from Travel board.  Thought I would also try here for advice.  Thanks!

We are planning a fall vacation and were considering Colorado with a side trip to Rocky Mountain National Park for a few days.  Recently, we found out we are pregnant and I would be at about 15 weeks when we would be looking at going.  I did ask my doctor about the trip and she said that since we would be out of the first trimester, we could go but there is a risk of increased nausea, lightheadedness, etc.  Essentially, the high altitude nature walks might be just fine but they also might not feel so great and we might find ourselves spending more time at lower altitudes.

Has anyone had any experience with higher altitudes while pregnant?  I understand everyone's experiences are different but I am curious what others have gone through.  We are worried about arriving there and then being disappointed by my inability to go on the scenic high altitude drives.  Thanks!

  • I've lived here for a couple years so I am getting more used to the altitude changes. Most people will experience some shortness of breath when increasing altitudes. If you plan on being quite active in some higher elevation I would suggest taking it slow (allow yourself to acclimate to one altitude for a day or so before attempting a hike). For example stay at 6000 feet for a day before going up to 8000 feet...etc..etc.. Plus keep yourself very hydrated to aid against altitude sickness.  I also read somewhere (CDC maybe?) to maybe not go above 12,000 feet when pregnant (unless you live there of course).
