Toddlers: 24 Months+

3-Day PT Support Needed

We are mid day 3 and I feel like there has been no progress.  I know dd is young but she was telling she was going and been staying dry for hours so I thought it was time, she has been in a big girl bed for months and I wanted to do it while on maternity leave.  Now I am second guessing myself and I have very little support from friends and family with this method.

She is holding it now but just won't go on the potty.  She held it all morning and finally went in her high chair at lunch.  I couldn't even get her to the potty to finish because she was done.  She did go a tiny bit in her undies several times this morning and then requests change but will not sit on the potty to finish.

Should I stick with it or try again in a few months?

  • I say finish it out.  After three days if there is still no progress, wait and try again.  Just keep on with the "Let mommy know if you need to go potty!" over and over and over.  Who knows, it could all click on day three.  She sounds like she IS ready based on those signs.  Good luck mama!

  • I didn't download the 3 Day PT, but with my DS, I started out totally naked, and that seemed to help.  I have read different things that say that, at first, if they have something tight around their waist (like underwear), they think it's a diaper and will go.  Plus if she's naked, the pee will run down her leg and she probably won't like it. We just started putting underwear on him at home and it's been a few weeks since we started.  I waited until he was proficient about going potty naked before I introduced underwear.
  • It's called the 3 Day PT, but it rarely works in three days...and even older kids who are super ready will still have accidents. Give it a full week and if you don't see progress by then, maybe take a break.

  • After a full morning of her not going, and having peed in her high chair the day before, DH sat her on the potty during lunch and put her lunch on a tray, and had her eat that way.  I was out of the house at the time, but sure enough, she went while eating!

Also agree about keeping her naked on the bottom.  DD got the pee part down within the 3 days, but a LOT of it was b/c of the persistence of DH.  Oh, and we gave her TONS of watered down juice, which we don't usually give, to make her have to go more.

  • Yes I agree about the juice.  I also never give juice, but i mixed 25% cranberry with water and it was crazy how many times she had to pee.  It was good, though, it happened right as she was getting it, and really reinforced it for her.  We still have accidents (we started this past Saturday), but mostly when we go out so there isn't enough time for her to tell us and then hold it until we're near a toilet.

I really think waiting until this age helped her be successful, though.  She was so resistant to using the potty, but as soon as we took away her diapers (and gave her panties - she was really excited about them), voila!  She seemed to really get it.

  • Thanks for the support, things are going much better.  We are going to stick it out she is starting to tell us and actually go.  She holds it though for a long time.

  • Stick with it. The 3 day potty training method is ridiculous, and sets unrealistic expectations for parents if the kid doesn't train within the time frame set up by the book. You know your child best; go with what will work, reinforce it, and know that it WILL happen. Good luck!
