Pregnant after IF

Pain killers? WWYD

So I had a pretty severe migraine the other day that lasted over 2 days -- regular tylenol was NOT doing the trick. I also tried drinking a little caffeine (which I havent been doing since before IVF and that didnt work)  I called my OB triage nurse and she said she couldnt "recommend" this over the phone but the percocet I had left over that I recieved from my IVF is safe to use during pregnancy. I took 2 and a phenegran and it got rid of my headache, but its been bothering me ever since.

The nurse said they sometimes have to give stronger drugs to women who were migraine prone before (which I was) to help with the migraines they have now.

I HATE the idea of taking anything but my prenatals. I dont want to take tylenol or anything and thats partially why it probably got so bad because I was just hoping if I went to sleep, it would go away.. but no such luck.

What do you think? Would you take it if you had a bad headache and they said it was okay? Also, do you drink any caffeine at all?

  • Pardon the phone paragraph: I've had the occasional diet coke while pregnant- maybe four fountain drinks the whole time? You need to do what it takes to keep yourself healthy, though!!!! Also, my headaches are all blood pressure related- sounds like you have experience with your migraines but you might want to check your BP, too? And - I finally was given a Rx for ambien when I just couldn't sleep a couple of weeks ago. I feel so guilty about sedating myself but you get to a point where you aren't doin anyone any good!!!!!

  • You should do what works for you. Especially if your doctor approves. That being said, if it were me I wouldn't take the pain killers. Especially at 12 weeks when your baby is still developing organs and stuff. I just think of all those commercials ( like: did you take paxcil while pregnant and now your child has cleft palette). You just don't know what can happen. But that is just me. I'm a worry wort. I would also add that I doubt that if you have a few cokes it will do severe harm. Aren't you allowed a coke or coffee a day? But again, being that I am a worrier I have had no caffeine since before BFP. At the end of the day you have to do what is right for you.

  • I haven't taken anything this pg, but fortunately, I haven't needed to. I've never had a migraine, but DH gets severe ones so I know that 'no meds' isn't an option.  Sorry you have to go through it.  What's done is done, but if you're concerned, I'd definitely discuss with your OB (not the nurse) about how to manage future ones.  Make sure they knwo your concerns -- part of their job is to calm us!

As for the caffeine -- I gave it up when cycling and never looked back.  I have higher BP to begin with (and family history of severe pre-e), so I'm doing everything I can to help keep it down.  All of my research though said a glass a day is fine!

  • As someone who has had severe migraines, I think I would do it as long as the nurse said it was ok. You don't do it all the time and migraines are AWFUL. And the caffeine - I read 300mg a day is OK! I gave it up during IVF, but sometimes when my m/s gets really bad I drink a glass of soda. I think sometimes being less stressed and pained is better for the baby.

  • I would do the percocets.  They're safe during pregnancy, just as the nurse said. Now, if you took them every day, and the baby became used to them that would be another story after birth, but that's not your issue here.  I'd just be careful, and make certain you're not taking percocets with tylenol, since they have tylenol in them.  You probably already know that and aren't doing that, but you'd be surprised...

And as for caffeine- I am doing caffeine.  One drink a day.  Although, today I had a latte (tall) at breakfast and then diet pepsi with dinner, because I was exhausted.  I was way, more concerned with DS than I am with this baby.

  • I had a kidney issue that started at 20w and my peri gave me vicodin.  I hadn't taken a single thing up until that point, but had to take the vicodin because the pain was so horrific.  The girls were fine.  :)

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • My SIL took narcotics while she was pregnant because of her migraines and her kids are fine. I would probably cut them in half or do whatever I could to take as little as possible.

As far as caffiene, I have one a day about 4 days a week, and occasionally I'll have two.  I wouldn't drink diet sodas though because artificial sweetener isn't recommended.

  • I drink 3 ounces of coffee every day. I'm 5 weeks.
  • I'm so sorry about your migraines. I would think if your nurse told you it's OK and you're not doing it every day, the pain meds are fine. I'm personally freaked out about taking anything even when dr. tells me it's safe, but I guess trust your dr.

For caffeine, I gave up my morning coffee, but I've been having maybe 1 Coke a week still.

  • I had some pretty bad migraines in the first tri and my ob gave me Vicodin to take. I didn't want to but I was in a lot of pain and it was the only thing that helped. Take the meds and don't feel guilty!

  • I think you and baby will be just fine!  If the OB/nurse said it was ok, then I'd try not to worry.  It's not like you're popping Percocets all day, every day. And I think having a cup or two of caffeinated soda or coffee a day is ok, too.  Sorry about your migraines.  Hopefully those pesky migraines stay away!
