We set out to try the 3 day PT but had zero expectations since DS had never told he that he needs to pee/poop. He hated sitting on the potty and never sat on it for more than 3 seconds. He basically didn't show any of the signs that meant he was ready for PT'ing. We needed him PT'ed for preschool and only had 2 available weekends the rest of the summer to do it. We went out and bought tons of underwear thinking that he would soil every single pair in a day.
We gave him tons of milk and diluted gatorade/vitamin water and just put him in his underwear and took him to the potty every 20 minutes. The first time, we had to physically force him to sit down on it. We told him his reward for sitting would be to watch a cars/thomas video on DH's iPod (which he was not allowed to touch before). But he didn't get to watch it until he sat down. In between the potty visits, he peed on himself a ton of times. Each time we would run him over to the potty, but it would be too late.
Finally, we got him there in time and he freaked out once he started peeing in the potty. but then there were lots of cheers and the cars video and after that he was okay with sitting on the potty. for the first 5 hours or so, he went through 15 pairs of underwear.
Then around noon the first day, something clicked! The rest of the day he only had 1 accident and we haven't had a pee accident yet. We've even taken him out of the house and he'll tell us if he has to pee. He is even dry for most of his naps and overnight (even though we still put him in pullups when he sleeps because of the poop factor).
He is still freaked out by pooping on the potty, so we're still working on that. We can tell when he has to go, but he's not used to sitting and pooping, so he always wants to stand up. Usually, we can catch it in time based on his body language, but he won't tell us if he has to poop. But still, we are thrilled with how he did! I'm glad we waited until now to PT because he responded really well to the reward factor. If we had tried this last year (when the grandparents were pressuring us to), he wouldn't have been as motivated since he probably wouldn't have cared about the reward.
