Flying with a toddler seat

If you flew with a 2-3 year old did they sit in their car seat or in the airplane seat? Just wondering if a convertible car seat will fit on the plan seats. What did you do?

Re: Flying with a toddler seat

  • We flew with the CARES harness when DS was about 2.5 and it worked great for us.  We didn't need a carseat at our final destination because my parents have one for him and it was just me and him traveling so I didn't want to lug the carseat and try to keep up with him.  It was super easy to use and DS really enjoyed sitting in the seat like a big boy.  It couldn't reach the seat in front of him to kick and he had a little wiggle room.  I kept the harness on him the entire flight and he didn't complain because it just seemed like his normal carseat straps (minus the crotch strap).  I was able to tighten it enough that there is no way he could have slid out the bottom.

  • We used her car seat (Graco 3-in1). I think the standard airplane seats are only 17" wide - we had to keep her arm rests up to fit it, but it was fine. Just make sure your car seat is FAA approved.

  • We flew in May and DS had just turned 3. We did not bring his car seat since we wouldn't need it when we arrived. He enjoyed just sitting in the seat with a lap belt and had plenty of wiggle room. He also couldn't kick the seat in front of him so that was another plus.

  • We checked the Car Seat upon arriving to the airport. He sat in his seat either awake or laid across it sleeping.

  • DD sits in her seat. She's a veteran flyer and knows to stay in her seat, especially during take-off and landing. If you think your child is more prone to wanting to get up and walk around, use the car seat.

  • We always take our seat (Cosco Scenera) and have her sit in it. She has fallen asleep on every flight so far.

Turbulence is no joke. I want my kid as secured as possible. We always end up hitting some, too.

  • We use the CARES harness as well when flying. If we need the carseat on the other end, I check it.

  • We used our car seat. It is a comfort thing for DD. There was no way she would have sat still or fallen asleep in the airplane seat, but in her car seat she did. It was a little tricky to buckle in and we needed a seat belt extender to get it set. The flight attendant told us they were not allowed to help buckle them in, but he did in the end anyway. On the way back the woman did not even offer to help and just waited till we figured it out. The man behind us on the way back was more helpful than the flight attendant, but that is a whole different story.
