I have a couple of questions. Please help me out, I only have 1 IRL friend who CD's and DH and I are really commiting to CDing for baby #2.
1. Would it be crazy to switch to CD for our first? He's 19 months old.
2. I really like Thirsties. It seems fairly easy. Are these an okay diaper? They're not too expensive and don't seem too difficult to use. We need it to be easy enough. Both grandmas watch the kid(s) when we work and still think of cloth diapering in terms of prefolds, pins and rubber pants.
3. Is it better to get the inserts or just to use prefolds? Do I have to use Thirsties prefolds?
4. How many prefolds and covers will I need?
5. Do I want snaps or velcro?
Thanks!! Any suggestions would be wonderful. My mom bought a ton of gdiapers for really cheap ($10 for 10) but I've only heard bad reviews.
Re: Please talk to me about Thirsties
Definitely not crazy!
Thirsties are a great diaper. They are made in Colorado and come in fun colors. The Duo Diaper is very easy to use and quite absorbant. I think velcro would be easier to use for grandmas. If you can afford it, I would use the Duo Diaper over prefolds and covers for a wiggly 19 month old. Have you tried the Gs? They don't get much love here but some people really like them.
I would buy a few to try out first before committing to one brand, and there are great trials at Jillian's Drawers that only cost $10.
Good luck!

No, especially if you buy OS diapers that you can use for #2

I like our Thirsties okay. The velcro on mine sucks and if DS wiggles the right way he'll take his diaper half off, but they fit him the best (from birth at 8lbs to now at 10ish lbs)
3. Is it better to get the inserts or just to use prefolds? Do I have to use Thirsties prefolds?
Personal preferance. For Thirsties we use a combination of the pocket diapers and the covers, and in the covers I use Thirsties stay dry inserts, but you really could use anything (and brand doesn't matter)
4. How many prefolds and covers will I need?
If that's all you're using, probably 6 covers and at least 2 dozen prefolds.
5. Do I want snaps or velcro?
Up to you. I thought we'd prefer velcro but we've decided we much prefer snaps.
All this being said, you shouldn't commit to one type/brand of diaper. It really changes daily which diaper we like best, and since we have a wide variety of brands I'm finding which works best.
Thanks for the tips!
I'll check out Jillian's Drawers.
I am getting so excited to CD, I love that there are so many cute designs!
Are you talking about thristies prefolds? If so, we have one and really like but I THINK it can only be trifolded? Just so you know...
Thirsties duo wraps=covers-love them-our favorite
Thirsties duo diapers=pockets-loved them for a little and the aplix went to garbage ridiculously fast. I won't buy them again
Thirsties duo fab fitted=fitted-I haven't tried the duo but had the sized fitted (pre duo fitteds) and liked them more for NB stage as far as fitteds go
Thirsties hemp prefold=prefold- like for extra AI2 soaker and insert
The gDiapers aren't so bad on a bigger kid who doesn't have runny poop like a newborn. We used them when we traveled with DD. So I'd give them a shot on your 19 month old just to see if you like them first. But if you buy one size dipes, as PP said, you can use them for the 19 month old and the new baby later on.
For DS, we have both the Thirsties Duo Wraps and the Duo Diapers. Both are velcro. The velcro is fine for the wraps since they don't get washed all the time, but they are already starting to wear out on the duo diapers. I do like them though. They fit well and are very absorbant for my heavy wetter.
