"Suits required" at work....? about savings on dry cleaning bills!

I work in sales in the banking industry and am required to wear black suits to work everyday. I just started working this month and I can already see the dry cleaning bills adding up fast! Has anyone used a home dry cleaning kits like Dryel? Does it work? I've been looking for a discount dry cleaner in my area but can't find one. Thanks!

  • I haven't used Dryel system for suits but I have found some suits that are machine washable - Ann Taylor Loft is where I bought mine. You could also look probably at JC Penney or Sears.

You can also ask about reimbursement for dry cleaning or tax deductions for "uniform washing" since technically it's a uniform. My accountant used to deduct laundry expenses when I had to wear hospital scrubs and wash them myself.

This.  I use to have to wear them every day and dryell was a lifesaver.  I was afraid dry cleaning all the time would damage the fabric.

  • My husband wears suits everyday, and I occasionally need to wear one.  My husband will use Dryel most of the time for his suits, and take them to the dry cleaners once every couple of months (or less often).  I always use Dryel, have never dry cleaned my suits.

  • I use Dryel on some of my dry clean only tops, never a suit, but it works really well and so much cheaper

This is what I do as well-machine washable suits. I got mine at JcPenney on clearance for cheap and they have lasted many years and still are in wonderful condition. They regularly have $10 off any $25 purchase coupons-paired with a sale you can stock up on some suits cheap.

  • Unfortunately, my company will not reimburse for dry cleaning. I did buy one suit at JCP and washed the slacks but was afraid to wash the jacket. I've ruined machine-wash jackets in the past  (maybe my cheap washer?). I think Dryel is the answer for me. Thank you for your advice!

  • Dryell is good for stretching dry-cleaning.  When sending suits to cleaners, be sure to send both pieces at the same time so they wear evenly.  You can tell the difference if you clean the pants more than the jacket or vice versa.
  • How dirty are they actually getting though?  Because I have a lot of "dry clean only" clothes and I maybe send them to the cleaners once a year.  If that.  I mean, if you are sitting in air conditioning all day you aren't that dirty and I'm sure you change as soon as you get home.  If I get a spot or something those little sponges you get that wipe off deodorant work great!  Wet them a little bit and pretty much anything comes off.

  • There was just an article about how hanging your clothes out in the sun to air out works better for smells than dry cleaning. Won't work for stains or ironing, but I think you could go months without drycleaning.

  • I do the dry cleaner thing.  But I only bring my suits when they're actually dirty (i.e., DS gave me a loving hug with yogurt all over his hands...)  And I usually just wear t-shirts under them.
  • I wear suits every day and I only dry clean about every 6 months.  Suits don't generally get that dirty and therefore don't require weekly cleaning.  I tend to hang them outside in the sun in the summer to "refresh" and/or just make sure I hang them up as soon as I get home.  I also tend to purchase 2 pairs or pants or 1 pant/1skirt to match each jacket to increase wardrobe at a smaller cost and bottoms tend to get dirtier than jackets in my experience.

Your company may not reimburse, but save your receipts, the IRS will! ;) ETA: that is not meant to be literal- the IRS of course will not pay you back but you can deduct a portion of the costs.
The IRS does not allow this as a deduction. It has to be uniforms that couldn't be worn in public, like ups or terminex. I've been in suits since 2003. It's not fun! Especially the dry cleaning bill.
