Since DD was born we have always had BF'ing problems. I have had a breast shield since day 1 and whenever I tried to wean her of the shield it was always a struggle to get her to latch onto the breast. It would be a huge battle and then a cry-fest!! I also noticed that my milk was starting to slowly decrease more and more so I called an LC. Upon visiting the LC we found out that not only is DD tongue-tied but she had not gained a single ounce in 3.6 weeks!!! I had a slight panic attack and my heart broke. The LC was encouraging and told me that it was due to DD being tongue-tied and had to have her tongue clipped. We have her clipped last Monday and I couldn't believe the difference it made in her feeding! My milk quickly came back, she is gaining weight and a much happier, fuss-free baby!! It is almost like I have a different baby. Any other moms out there with tongue-tied babies? I had never heard of this until last week. Now I feel as though I need to tell everyone about tongue-tie to prevent anyone from going through what we went through.
Re: Tongue-Tie...Anyone Else?!
I'm pretty sure my daughter had tongue-tie, only no one ever diagnosed it and clipped it. I went through weeks and weeks of breastfeeding hell. The worst part was I knew I had her latched right but all the LCs and LLL people I talked to kept telling me if I had her latched right, it wouldn't hurt and my nipples wouldn't be so torn up. I almost gave up breastfeeding because I couldn't figure out why what they were telling me wasn't matching reality.
I try to spread the word about it too in hopes that no other mom has the horrible experience I had.
My baby was tounge-tied and we had his frenulum clipped after a couple of weeks, but we've still had a lot of BF'ing issues. We saw the LC a few times and were told everything seemed great and there was no need to come back. I was still really concerned about his weight and I was using a nipple shield because it was still hurting, but everyone told me he was fine and looked like he was growing. I took him in for a weight check and found out he had not gained weight in 3 weeks, even though he had grown almost 2 inches taller!
I felt so horrible and our pedi freaked out. They even tested my breastmilk. The pedi and LC's were not on the same page and luckily I was able to get them all in the same room and have a conversation with them. Even though his frenulum was clipped, he was not bringing his tongue forward enough, so we've been doing suck training, supplementing at the breast with BM and/or formula and I bought a scale so I can see that he is gainign weight consistently.
Randomly, I'm in SD, too!
I am glad to hear that I (DD) am not the only one with this issue. Poor girl. We are doing a rigid routine of bottle-feed formula, breast next and pump right after. The formula is to get weight on her, the breast is to get her used to sucking/comfortable at breast and to also get my milk in and pumping for breast stimulation and to empty them. Whew!! So far it is working and Dorian is taking to the breast well. My milk supply is just not at full speed yet to do breast only so that is why we have formula too. I am telling everyone about tongue-tie. The past week has been an emotional rollercoaster but I am glad we got it taken care of.
San Diego mommies-I live in Bay Park (in front of Mission Bay). Where are you both located? Glad to hear everyone got there babies taken care of too!
I'm in Encinitas!
We live in North County (Oceanside). I used to live near Mission Bay, though. Morganaday, we have the same playmat for our boys in our siggies. R loves his!
I think the hard part with tongue tie is that it's not there or not, it's a spectrum. So one doctor might say "that's normal" and another would say "we should cut that". Thing is, if it's a problem, it's a problem and something has to happen. I'm so sorry it took so long for you to get it done - and I've heard the same story way too many times.
Doctors, nurses, and even LC can be so freaking clueless sometimes. I want to force them all to join LLL and learn some real-world breastfeeding knowledge.
